The Louisville Leopards Boys Soccer shutout the host Coventry Comets 3-0 Thursday Night at Coventry Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. With the victory, Louisville evens their record at 4-4-1 on the season.
The Leopards broke a scoreless tie with three second half goals. Senior Riley Adams put Louisville in front off a pass in the box by junior Mason Foley with 27:46 left in the second half. For Adams it was his team leading 12th goal of the season and for Foley his 3rd assist of the year.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Leopards until they pushed through two more insurance goals late in the second half. A shot on goal deflected off Coventry junior goalkeeper Gunnar Leary and sophomore Cooper Gilbert was there to gain control of it on the right side of the box. He then tapped a pass back to his left to charging freshman Brady Adams who booted it into the open left side of the net to put Louisville in front 2-0 at the end of the 74th minute. For Adams it was his second goal of the year and for Gilbert his first assist of the season.
The Leopards final goal came with under two minutes left in the game. The ball was popped into the air around midfield and junior Austin Smith headed it ahead to Riley Adams to his right. Smith then crossed back towards the middle and Adams led him ahead with a perfectly centered pass. Smith controlled the ball in stride, stayed onside, gained control with defenders closing in, and blasted it into the top of the net to give Louisville a commanding 3-0 lead with 1:45 to go. For Smith it was his second goal of the year and for Adams his 4th assist of the campaign.
Junior goalkeeper Joe Reynolds recorded his third shutout of the year for the Leopards. He would finish with 4 saves in goal as Louisville would out-shoot the Comets 11-4 for the game. Leary also had 8 saves for Coventry.
The Leopards have now defeated the Comets in back-to-back seasons. Louisville now leads the all-time series 4-3-1 overall which includes a 2-1 record when playing at Coventry. This is the first time the Leopards have ever shutout the Comets in their head-to-head series which dates back to 2001.
