Leopards Runningback Shannon Hostetler carried the ball 26 times for a game-high 167 yards rushing. Hostetler capped off the opening drive of the game with a 1 yard touchdown run to give Louisville a 7-0 advantage with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

The Wildcats answered with three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a commanding 21-7 lead. Canton South failed to score on a 4th-and-goal pass in the opening quarter, but knotted the game at 7-7 when Quarterback Ray Kolonchuk scored on a 5 yard touchdown run with 7:55 left in the second quarter.

Dave Antenucci’s interception halted a potential Leopards scoring drive and the Wildcats marched 70 yards the other way. Fullback Dan Smith caught a short pass in the left flat and took it 40 yards down the left sideline to give South a 13-7 lead. After a Leopard penalty, the Wildcats elected to go for two, but their conversion run was stuffed for no gain by the Louisville defense.

Mike Leahy recorded Canton South’s second interception of the quarter setting the Cats up at the Louisville 49. This led to a 10 yard touchdown pass from Kolonchuk to Joe Tomlin to put South ahead 19-7. The pair connected again on the conversion try to give the Wildcats a 14-point lead. Tomlin would finish with 6 receptions for the game.

That cut the Canton South lead to 21-10 at the break. The field goal attempt was setup by a delayed run on the play before. Hostetler ran 30 yards through the Wildcats defense that was setup for the pass to put Louisville into scoring range with just seconds to go.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but the Leopards edged one possession closer early on in the fourth quarter. On 4th-and-4, Louisville Quarterback Brian Mathie hit Wide Receiver Matt Zwick on a 6 yard slant route in the middle of the endzone to cut the deficit to 21-16 with 10:39 left in the game. With his main option covered in the back of the endzone, Mathie ran left for the two-point conversion to make it Canton South 21, Louisville 18.

However, Canton South would answer with a 4th down scoring pass of their own with 6:31 to play. On 4th-and-5, Kolonchuk looked right and then found Dan Hastings open near the left sideline. The short pass was enough for the first down, but Hastings was then sprung by a blocker and completed the 21 yard touchdown score that all but sealed the game for the Wildcats.

Canton South out-gained Louisville 300-286 in total offense and held a 16-14 advantage in first downs. Smith led the Wildcats ground attack with 31 rushes for 144 yards. Kolonchuk was finished 10 of 15 for 128 yards with 3 touchdowns through the air to go along with his 5 yard touchdown scamper.
