The Louisville Leopards fell to the host Canton McKinley Bulldogs 23-7 back on Saturday, October 15, 1983 in front of a crowd of around 7,000 at Fawcett Stadium.
Paul Farrah returned a kickoff 89 yards for the Leopards only score of the contest with 45 seconds to go before halftime. The touchdown cut the Louisville deficit in half as Canton McKinley took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.
The Leopards fumbled away the opening second half kickoff and the Bulldogs recovered on the Louisville 20 yard line. Two plays later, McKinley Quarterback Kevin Parrish faked a hand off and threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Jeff Smith to put the Pups ahead 21-7.
Canton McKinley earlier took a 14-0 first half advantage on a pair of Troy Jenkins touchdown runs. The Leopards defense held the Bulldogs to a three-and-out on their first possession of the contest. However, McKinley needed just one play to get on the board on their second drive of the game. Jenkins broke a tackle to the left and then cut back to the right into the open field for a 72 yard touchdown run.
Jenkins would later cap off a 71 yard drive with a 6 yard touchdown run with 59 seconds to go before halftime. Jenkins accounted for 51 yards on that drive alone finishing the first half with 15 carries for 157 yards. The Bulldogs would out-gain the Leopards 391-109 yards in total offense with Jenkins accumulating 219 yards on the ground via 27 attempts.
The Louisville offense struggled against the McKinley defense. Quarterback Brian Mathie was 5 of 16 for 45 yards and threw three interceptions. Tight End Guy Michel finished as the Leopards top receiver with 2 catches for 26 yards. Runningback Shannon Hostetler accounted for most of the LHS offense with 11 carries for 62 yards.
On defense, Louisville was led by Bruce Mathie who picked off a McKinley pass in the endzone. Brian Brahler and Mike McKinney also recorded sacks for the Leopards who fell to 4-3 on the year.
The Bulldogs only other score came on special teams. Louisville faced a 4th-and-29 from their own 1 yard line and looked to punt. The LHS punter fielded a bad snap, but a charging Canton McKinley player broke past a blocker and stormed in for the tackle and the safety to make it 23-7.
