Bulldogs Rally and “Walk” Off Against Leopards 8-7 – Baseball

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team built a 6-0 lead, but the host Canton McKinley Bulldogs rallied for an 8-7 walk-off win Friday Evening at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. With the loss, Louisville drops back to an even 7-7 on the year.
Senior first baseman Ryan Aljancic batted 2-for-3 and hit a 3-run double in the top of the first to lead the Leopards. Junior shortstop JT Popick and sophomore centerfielder Charlie Roberts also registered 2 hits each for Louisville.
Leopards Strike Early to Build 6-0 Lead
Sophomore designated hitter Connor Morley and Popick hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the first to kickstart the Leopards offense. Senior second baseman Broc Pickens followed and drew a 4-pitch walk to load the bases.
Senior third baeman Kaedin Gotshall singled to right field in the next at-bat scoring Morley from third to get Louisville on the scoreboard. Aljancic followed by driving a 1-0 pitch to center field that cleared the bases in bringing home Popick, Pickens, and Gotshall to put LHS in front 4-0.
The Leopards tacked on to their lead in the top of the second. Junior right fielder Zack Seaman and Roberts cracked back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Morley drove home Seaman on a ground out to first base. Then Roberts came home via Popick’s sacrifice fly to center field that put Louisville in front 6-0.
Bulldogs Cut Into Deficit
The Bulldogs chopped the Leopard lead in half with a 2-out rally in the bottom of the second inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases and shortstop Charles Parsons scored when a pickoff attempt went awry. Two pitches later, left fielder Nate Martinez smashed a 2-run double to center field scoring third baseman Anthony Dipietro and right fielder Brandon Leggett to cut the McKinley deficit to 6-3.
The Bulldogs continued to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the third. Designated hitter Zach Stokoe singled home RJ Petties to cut their disadvantage to 6-4 with no one out in the inning. However, Louisville junior pitcher Anthony Warner was able to retire the next three McKinley batters to keep LHS in front heading into the fourth.
McKinley Rallies to Tie Game at 7-7
The Leopards answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. Pickens RBI double on a fly ball to left field brought home Roberts who singled to start the inning. 7-4 LHS.
The Bulldogs tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth inning. Second baseman Tyler Moag hit an RBI double to left field that scored Leggett. Then Petties cleared the bases with a game-tying 2-run triple to right field that knotted the game at 7-7.
Wilkins Gets Out of Jam in 7th
The two teams managed only a lone base runner in each inning at bat in the fifth and sixth as the game remained tied at 7-7.
Louisville threatened in the top half of the seventh inning with two runners on and 1 out. But McKinley relief pitcher Savion Wilkins struck out the next two Leopards batters swinging to preserve the tie.
Bulldogs “Walk” Off To Win
The Bulldogs loaded the bases with 1 out in the last of the seventh inning. Louisville pitcher Tyler Jackson fanned the next batter for the second out of the inning. Howeve,r Martinez followed and walked on four pitches allowing Dipietro to walk home for the 8-7 McKinley win.
The Bulldogs out-hit the Leopards 13-11 for the contest as five different McKinley batters recorded multi-hit games. Martinez, Moag, Parsons, Petties, and Landon Waller all finished with two hits each for Canton.
