Lady Leopards Rally Past Cardinals 3-1 in AAC First-Place Showdown – Girls soccer

The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Soccer Team took control of first place in the All-American Conference with a 3-1 road victory over the Canfield Cardinals Monday night at Bob Dove Field. Reese Riley scored twice and Kasey Lint added the go-ahead goal in-between as the Lady Leopards improved to 8-2 overall and remained perfect at 5-0 in AAC play.
Canfield entered the first-place showdown unbeaten in conference play, but dropped to 6-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the AAC with the loss.

Riley Scores Twice Hours After Malone Commitment
It was a memorable day on and off the field for Riley.
Earlier Monday, the Louisville senior announced her verbal commitment to continue her academic and soccer career at Malone University. Hours later, she delivered a pair of goals in one of the Lady Leopards’ biggest games of the regular season.
Louisville trailed 1-0 late in the first half before Ava Seitz helped create the equalizer. Seitz connected with Riley, who found the back of the net with 6:06 remaining to knot the contest at 1-1.
Riley struck again in the second half to provide Louisville some breathing room. Haile Folk sent a free kick from near the left sideline into the penalty area, where Riley gained control on the left side of the box. She fired across goal into the right side of the net to extend the Leopard lead to 3-1 with 27:51 remaining.
The two-goal performance raised Riley’s team-leading total to 13 goals on the season.
Lint Completes Late First-Half Turnaround
Louisville needed just 2:27 after Riley’s equalizer to completely turn the game around.
With 3:39 remaining before halftime, Kasey Lint put the Lady Leopards in front for the first time. Her initial shot was stopped by the Canfield goalkeeper, but Lint stayed with the play and knocked the rebound into the net to give Louisville a 2-1 advantage.
The goal was Lint’s fourth of the season and sent the Leopards into halftime with the lead after they had trailed just minutes earlier.
Louisville scored twice during the final 6:06 of the opening half to transform a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Barthel Earns Player of the Game Honors
Although she didn’t appear in the scoring summary, Olivia Barthel’s impact did not go unnoticed.
The Louisville coaching staff selected Barthel as its Player of the Game following another strong performance. The honor came on the heels of her effort in Louisville’s conference victory at Warren G. Harding, as Barthel delivered back-to-back standout performances during the Lady Leopards’ last two AAC games.
Her work helped Louisville win a physical, high-stakes road matchup and remain the conference’s only team without a loss or tie in league play.
Edgein, Leopards Blank Cardinals After Halftime
Canfield struck first with 15:20 remaining in the opening half. Tristyn Edgein made the initial save, but Gianna Velasquez collected the rebound and finished to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.
It would be Canfield’s only goal of the night.
Edgein and the Louisville defense kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard throughout the second half while the offense completed the comeback. Edgein finished with four saves as the Lady Leopards protected their two-goal advantage over the final 27-plus minutes.
Louisville finished with a 9-5 advantage in shots, while the teams were even with five corner kicks apiece.
Louisville Takes Control of AAC Race with Rematch in October
Monday’s victory moved Louisville to a perfect 5-0 in AAC play, while Canfield slipped to 3-1-1.
The win gives the Lady Leopards valuable separation atop the conference standings, but the race is not over. Louisville and Canfield will meet again on October 10 at Louisville Leopards Stadium in a rematch that could carry major implications in determining the AAC champion.
Louisville will also continue navigating the remainder of its conference schedule before that showdown.
Leopards Match Previous Road Goal Total at Canfield
Monday’s victory also represented a significant breakthrough in a series historically controlled by Canfield.
Entering the contest, the Cardinals had outscored Louisville 26-4 over the first seven all-time meetings. The Lady Leopards had scored only three total goals in five previous trips to Canfield.
Louisville matched that entire previous road output in a single night Monday.
The 3-1 victory improved the Lady Leopards to 3-5 all-time against the Cardinals and 2-4 on the road. It was Louisville’s first victory in the series since a 1-0 home win in 2017 and its first win at Canfield since a 2-1 overtime sectional victory in 2006.
