Lady Leps Can’t Hold Back Red Sea in 4th, Fall to Bulldogs

HIGHLIGHTS:

Canton McKinley 52, Louisville 36

The Lady Leopards jumped out to a double digit advantage more than halfway through the second quarter, but succumbed to the Bulldogs in the second half falling 52-36 in the first game ever in the new Louisville Gymnasium.  Brianna Libertore led the Lady Leopards with 12 points.

Things were going the Lady Leps way when they won the opening tip and Libertore smashed home a shot just in front of the foul line for the first points in the new gym.  Two steals by Molly Brown and another by Mackenzie Storlie helped Louisville jump out to a 7-2 advantage.

But the Lady Pups roared back with a 7-0 run that included a four point possession as a result of Ameryst Alston’s put-back of Tazhia Petit’s “And 1” missed free throw.  Alston capped off the run by burying a three-pointer a little later.  She would finish with 17 points on the evening.

The Lady Leps scored the first six points of the second quarter.  Libertore scored on a put-back, Storlie heaved a pass from half court to a wide open Brown who laid it home, and then from the far baseline Brown lunged a pass to a streaking Clara Lemmon who scored easily.  Crashing the boards and quick hands for a defense that forced 9 steals on the evening propelled Louisville to a 21-11 lead past the midway point in the second quarter.

After trimming the lead to 23-17 at the break, McKinley enacted a full-court press for the remainder of the contest.  This gave Louisville fits for the majority second half as the Lady Pups looked to expand on a 31-30 advantage after three quarters.

Mimicking Louisville in the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored the first six points of the final period.  Louisville roared back to cut the advantage to 37-34, but would not score again until the final seconds.  A 15-0 run by McKinley was fueled by 9 fourth quarter points from Alston and 10 more from Gabby Kendall.  Kendall ended the night leading the all scorers with 20.

A sweet behind the back flip from Storlie to Jordan Monnot for a lay-in ended the evening, but the Lady Pups had already showed why they are the defending District Champions.
