Louisville 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 1

Rachel Baughman had a hat trick for the second straight game and Lizzy Mont also added a goal to lead the Louisville Lady Leopards past the St. Thomas Aquinas Lady Knights 4-1 Monday Night at a very rainy Sirpilla Stadium.

The Freshman Connection helped the Lady Leopards get on the board first when Devin Kring delivered a pass to Mont to the right of the goal.  The Knights goalie came out of the net in an attempt to block Mont’s shot attempt, but Mont skied the ball and watched it loop into the net.

Excellent defense by Sami Keefe and Sarah Jaroszyk setup the next Louisville goal.  The two combined to steal the ball from an Aquinas player before Keefe sent a pass over to Mont.  Mont blasted a shot on goal that was blocked by the Aquinas goalie.  However, Baughman rebounded the deflection and tapped it into the net to make it 2-0.

With a little over five minutes left in the first half the rain started to come down hard.  But that didn’t stop the Lady Leps who continued to pour it on St. Thomas.  A give and go from Beatty's Sports Grey Louisville Athletics T-ShirtBaughman to Jessica Hamsher back to Baughman about 50 yards out setup the next score.  Baughman then faked out a defender and had a nearly clear path to the box.  From 20 yards away she slid the ball into the right side of the net past the arms of the outstretched goalie to give Louisville a 3-0 halftime advantage.

The Lady Leps continued to fight as hard as the pelting rain that was coming down in the second half.  Jaroszyk received a throw in from Samantha Kibler and juked past a defender.  She then sent a pass to the center of the goal box that found the foot of Baughman who tapped it home.  The goal was her third of the game and thus her second consecutive hat trick.  Baughman has now scored 8 goals in 4 games this season.

Lady Leopard goalie Becca Springman made several key saves throughout the game before being pulled late in the contest.  The Knights drew a penalty kick with 1:58 remaining in the match and Maddie Knowles flushed home St. Thomas’s only score as a result to make the final count 4-1.

While winning the battle for Louisville in the rain was another step forward, the Lady Leopards will now get down to business in their next two games against Salem and Marlington.  Their focus is singular and their goal has never been closer as Louisville Girls Soccer seeks their first ever NBC Crown.
