Lady Leopards Crush 4 Homers, Smash Salem 11-0
FULL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS
Louisville 11, Salem 0
For the second straight game Freshman Katie Cozy hit two home runs, Chandler Rice went 5-for-5 at the plate, and Gianna Falcone pitched a seven inning shutout as Louisville slammed Salem 11-0 Thursday evening at Southeast Elementary School in Salem. Rice and Jordan Monnot also hit home runs to lead the Lady Leopards (7-1, 4-0).
The Leopards first started tallying their runs in the opening inning. After two quick outs, Cozy smacked a double to left. Rice followed with a single in the same direction to bring home Cozy and advanced to second base in the process. She then stole third and advanced home when Annie Woolf reached base via a Quaker error. 2-0 Leps.
In the circle, Falcone worked out of a first inning jam. With the bases loaded and one out, she delivered a strikeout and catcher Emily Isla delivered a bullet to Monnot at first. Monnot applied the tag to the baseless runner and just like that the inning was over. Falcone would go on to strikeout seven Quakers and work out of another jam in the fourth inning during her third win of the season.
Falcone also helped her own cause in the bottom of the second when she led off the inning with a double. Brittany
Flanigan followed two batters later with an RBI double to score Falcone and make it 3-0 Leopards. Flanigan would then walk across the plate after Cozy crushed a home run to straight away center.
Not to be outdone by her fellow teammate, Rice demolished the very next pitch to left-center for her first home run of the season to put Louisville up 6-0. Later in the fourth inning Rice again needed no help in chalking up another run for her Lady Leopards. She singled to first, stole second and third, and then scored on a passed ball. Rice finished the night with five steals and scored three runs.
Three batters later, Monnot signed-up for the home run derby by rocketing a ball 10-15 feet past the left field fence. The no-doubter was also Monnot’s first home run of the season and it gave Louisville an 8-0 advantage.
In the fifth inning, Cozy homered for a second time. Her two-out bomb cleared the left field wall for her fifth homer of the season in just eight games. According to our records she is the first Lady Leopard player ever to hit multiple home runs in back-to-back games.
Louisville could not quite get their tenth run across to end the game early, but scored two more runs in the seventh inning. Amy Hoover singled aboard to lead-off the inning then copied Rice’s earlier pattern. She stole both second and third before scoring on a passed ball. Later in the inning Rice finished her perfect evening by singling home Hollyann Mullett to put the Leps up 11-0.
Louisville is now 3-0 all-time against Salem outscoring them 46-2 in those three contests. The Lady Leopards will have Friday off before playing three games against teams from the Federal League in three days.
