Lady Leopards Alone in 1st After Battle of Undefeated
Video Highlights
Louisville 25-25-25, Minerva 19-15-22
The Battle of Undefeated NBC teams took place Tuesday evening at Louisville High School and the Lady Leopards past with flying colors. Louisville (10-2, 7-0) defeated Minerva (8-4, 6-1) in three straight sets by a count of 25-19, 25-15, 25-22.
The Lions had no answer for the Leopards middle hitting duo of Brittany Lowry and Jordan Monnot. Monnot set the tone early for the Lady Leopards earning 7 of her game-high 15 kills in the first set. Lowry also had 2 blocks and 11 kills, none of which were bigger than her match-winning kill to give the Lady Leopards the third set 25-22.
The Lady Leopards faced adversity before the game even started as starting Setter Maddie Gramoy was still unable to play after suffering from an injury at Carrollton last Thursday. In her stead, Junior Kristen Bricker shined brightly in delivering 29 assists.
Ashton Ruffing led the Lady Leopards in serving with 4 of her 14 points coming off aces and Mackenzie Begue tallied 16 digs. Begue also made a huge save in the third set when the Lions sent back a blocked Louisville spike. The Senior Libero extended to save the ball from hitting in the back left corner of the court which would have given Minerva their third straight point and narrowed the gap to 23-22. But instead, Lowry made another beautiful bump on the ball hit by Begue before Monnot pushed it over the net. Minerva failed to handle the rally on the second hit, which gave the point to Louisville and a controlling 24-21 lead.
While the Lady Leopards celebrate a sweep of their arch-rival and stand alone in first place in the NBC Standings, their dream is only halfway to a reality. At the midway mark of the NBC Schedule Louisville remains undefeated, but on Thursday they travel to defending champion Salem to take on the Quakers.
Louisville and Minerva also participated in Volley for the Cure during the game Tuesday to raise money for Breast Cancer patients. Raffle baskets were won and shirts were given out to servers in-between sets. May our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims & patients of this horrible disease.
