The Louisville Leopards Varsity Wrestling Team competed at the Josh Hephner Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Austintown Fitch High School. The Leopards ran away with first place as a team with 377.5 points. The South Range Raiders took second place with 281 points and the Lake Blue Streaks claimed third with 261 points.

This is the second straight year that Louisville has won the Josh Hephner Memorial Tournament team title.

Six Leopards Take 1st and Run the Table

Six different Leopards finished undefeated and claimed first place in their respective weight classes. They included sophomore Kolten Barker (113), senior Pablo Castro (132), junior Dominic Hoffarth (138), senior Brenden Severs (165), senior Blake Schaffer (190), and senior Cameron Brazek (285). These six Louisville wrestlers compiled a combined record of 46-0 over the weekend.

Nine different Leopards placed during the tournament. Juniors Dylan Rhoads (126) and Lacy Harvey (106) both finished undefeated in their pools before finishing 3rd and 4th place in their respective weight classes. Freshman Wyatt Smith (150) overcame an early setback en rout to taking 7th.

All fourteen Louisville wrestlers contributed to the team total. junior Connor Novosel (120) 10 points, senior Josiah Walker (144) 8 points, freshman Gavin Knisley (215) 8 points, junior Gavin Hamilton (175) 6 points, and junior Jude Yeager (157) 5.5 points rounded out the non-placing Leopards.

Schaffer Named MVP

Blake Schaffer Josh Hephner Memorial Tournament MVP

Schaffer was named tournament MVP after finishing 8-0 in a deep 190 weight class. Schaffer ripped off five straight convincing victories in his pool to start the tournament that included 3 first period falls, 1 third period fall, and a victory through disqualification.

Schaffer blanked Stow-Munroe Falls senior Will Edmondson (#20 in DI) by 15-0 technical fall in the 190 quarterfinals. He then advanced to the finals after defeating Southeast senior Jaidyn Sapp (#3 in DIII) by 15-2 major decision. In the championship bout, Schaffer defeated Mogadore senior Tyler Knight (#2 in DIII) by a 17-8 major decision as well.

Schaffer is currently the #2 ranked wrestler in 190 for Division II and now holds a 30-3 individual record for the season.

Castro Leads Louisville with 7 Pins

Castro, last year’s Josh Hephner Memorial Tournament MVP, led the Leopards with 46 team points after pinning opponents in 7 of his 8 matches. Six of his victories by fall came in the opening period.

Castro pinned Lake senior Thomas Cassetty (#19 in DI) in 1:21 to win the 132 championship semifinals. In the championship final, Castro earned a convincing 10-3 decision against Mentor sophomore Antonio Shelley (#6 in DI) to claim first place in 132.

Castro is currently the top ranked wrestler in 132 for Division II and holds a team best 31-2 record for the year.

Severs Defeats Pair of DI Top Wrestlers

Severs, the #8 ranked wrestler in 165 for Division II, won 4 of his first 5 bouts by fall to advance to the 165 championship semifinals. Severs upset Stow-Munroe Falls senior J.R. Reed (#3 in DI) 1-0 in ultimate tiebreaker to advance to the championship match.

Severs again faced a top 10 Division I wrestler in Willoughby South senior Nick Hollerbach (#10 in DI). Severs won a hard fought 4-3 decision to claim the 165 crown. Severs is now 27-5 on the season.

Other Leopard Highlights

Other top Louisville scorers included Hoffarth with 45 points (8-0 with 5 pins), Brazek with 42 points (8-0 with 6 pins), and Barker with 41.5 points (7-0 with 5 pins).

Hoffarth (23-4), the top ranked 138 wrestler in Division II, won a 6-2 decision against South Range senior Michael Markulin (#6 in DIII) in the 138 championship bout. Brazek (27-3) pinned Hubbard sophomore Nick Bowser (#17 in DII) in 3:31 during the heavyweight 1st place match.

Barker (26-6) defeated a pair of DI ranked freshman en rout to the 113 title. Barker defeated Jackson freshman Vann Riordan (#13 in DI) by 17-2 technical fall in the 113 semifinals. Barker also won by 12-5 decision against Mentor freshman Jack Deboe (#14 in DI) in the 113 championship bout. Barker pinned Deboe earlier during the initial poll matches as well.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next return to Austintown Fitch to compete in the EOWL Tournament on Friday, January 28 and Saturday, January 29.
