My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the Josh Hephner Memorial Wrestling Tournament Friday at Austintown Fitch High School. The Leopards scored 288.5 team points overall which earned them first place out of 16 competing teams.

Five different Louisville wrestlers won their weight classes led by Pablo Castro (132) who was named tournament MVP. Other champions included Garett Lautzenheiser (126), Brenden Severs (182), Noah Peterson (220), and Cameron Brazek (285).


Castro Named Tournament MVP

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdCastro was named tournament MVP after completing a perfect 5-0 run through the 132 bracket. He won by fall in each of his first four match-ups which included making quick work of Liberty’s Eli Jones in 23 seconds during the quarterfinals and Austintown Fitch’s David Shannon in 50 seconds during the semifinals.

The 132 championship bout featured one of the best matchups of the tournament with two top 5 Division II wrestlers being pinned against each other. The #5 ranked Castro pulled off the upset of #2 ranked Kyren Butler of Copley by a nail-biting 1-0 decision.


Lautzenheiser and Severs Rack Up Team Points

Samantha's Grill AdLautzenheiser took a similar path to his 126 title and eclipsed 150 career victories in the process. He pinned his first four opponents to advance to the 1st place match against Copley’s Canyon Wells, ranked #5 in Division II. The #1 ranked Lautzenheiser was dominate in earning a 19-4 technical fall over Wells to claim first place.

Lautzenheiser’s 33.5 team point total was only eclipsed by Sever’s 34 team points earned after his perfect path through the 182 bracket. The #7 ranked Severs won all five of his matches by fall, which included pinning Austintown Fitch’s Jacob Small in 4:37 during the championship bout. Small was ranked #12 in Division I at 182.


Peterson and Brazek Pass Tough Semifinal Tests

Jenny Can Cleaning AdLouisville was dominate in the upper weight classes as Peterson and Brazek combined to go 10-0 with 5 total pins. The key victory for the #10 ranked Peterson came in the 220 semifinals when he upset Clearfork’s #9 ranked Landon Smith by a close 2-1 decision. Peterson then blanked Springfield Local’s AJ Stallsmith 5-0 in the first place match.

Brazek, ranked #11 in Division II, also passed his toughest test in the heavyweight semifinals. He earned a 5-2 decision over Boardman’s Jake Powell, who came in ranked #7 in Division I. Brazek also shutout his opponent, Mayfield’s Antonio Mangelluzzi, in the championship bout by 4-0 decision.

Rhoads and Kennedy Place 2nd

Dylan Rhoads (106) and Dan Kennedy (152) both took second place after falling to highly ranked opposition in their first place matches. Rhoads racked up 27 team points in his first four matches before dropping a 3-1 decision to Mayfield’s Vinnie D`Alessandro, Division I’s #1 ranked 106 wrestler. Kennedy also lost his first place match by 3-1 decision after compiling 25.5 team points. He fell to Austintown Fitch’s Tyler Linter, the #8 ranked 152 wrestler in Division I.


13 Leopards Place Individually

Overall 13 of the 14 Leopards placed in the tournament. Dan Adams (113) defeated Southeast’s Mason Amodio by 21-6 technical fall to take third place. Josiah Walker (138) and Josiah Leonard (145) also won their fifth place matches. Walker earned a thrilling 4-3 decision in overtime and Leonard won by fall in his final match of the evening.

Justice Bolyard (195) also won by pin in the first period of his 7th place match. Other Louisville wrestlers placing included Lacy Harvey (120) and Jude Yeager (160) who both took 8th in their respective weight classes. Austin Stauffer (170), the lone Leopard wrestler that did not advance to a placement match, rallied back from two early defeats to earn the equivalent of 10th place.


Louisville On Another Level

The #2 ranked Leopards dominated in convincing fashion scoring 47 more points than the host Austintown Fitch Falcons who came in second with 241.5 team points. The Mayfield Wildcats took third with 210 points and the closest Division II team to Louisville was the #7 ranked Copley Indians who claimed fourth with 187 points.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next compete at the EOWL Tournament held at Austintown Fitch High School on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30.
