BRITTANY FLANIGAN’S TWO-RUN HOMER

Game 1: Louisville 2, Lake 1

The Lady Leopards scored two early runs and Brittany Flanigan pitched a complete game two-hitter as the Louisville Lady Leopards defeated the Lake Lady Blue Streaks 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at the Field of Dreams.

Like a “blue streak” the Lady Leopards quickly jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first.  Flanigan reached base on a walk and then Emily Isla doubled to put both runners in scoring position.  Katie Cozy then hit a sac fly to center to bring home Flanigan.  Chandler Rice followed Cozy by hitting a high fly to medium left field field, but the routine fly was dropped and Isla made it home safely to make it 2-0 Leopards.

Not much happened offensively after that.  Flanigan pitched a no-hitter through four innings, but Lake made her pay for her only blemish in the third.  Macy Cook lead-off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a Taylor Libby sacrifice bunt.  A 5-3 groundout put Cook on third before she came home on a wild pitch.

Lake’s Mckenzie Hays and Kari Snyder each had doubles in the fifth and sixth innings.  However, the pitching by Flanigan and the defensive effort by the Leopards did the rest.  Both Carlee Baumgardner and Shelby Swigert made key diving & jumping catches in the outfield respecively to stop possible Lake threats.  Louisville held Lake scoreless for the final four innings to seal the victory.

Game 2: Louisville 11, Lake 3

The Lady Leopards scored five runs in the first inning and four more in the fifth during their 11-3 win over the Lake Blue Streaks in game two of Saturday’s home doubleheader.  Brittany Flanigan also hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to insure the victory.

Beatty's Sports Spring Sports Logos SoftballThe Lady Leopards struck early and often in the second game as they produced five runs in the opening inning.  Cozy’s one-out double put her and Isla in scoring position with the clean-up hitting Rice next.  Rice then delivered a two-run single to right field to break the scoreless tie.

Annie Woolf, Jordan Monnot, and Shelby Swigert then cracked three straight singles to load the bases.  Monnot’s hit brought home Rice to make it 3-0 Louisville.  After an immediate hesitation, Woolf still managed to score via a wild pitch during Gianna Falcone’s at-bat.  A groundout to second base by Falcone then brought Monnot across the plate to put Louisville up a 5-0.

No one scored again until the fourth inning when Lake dropped three on the board.  Hays blasted a 2-run home run for the Blue Streaks that also brought home Grace Hutcherson to cut the deficit to 5-2.  After a quick second out, Lake hit three straight singles to add another run to their side of the scoreboard.  Then, McKenna Stephens singled to center bringing home Libby to make it 5-3.

After a walk, Falcone struck out the next hitter to escape the inning with the lead.  Falcone pitched the entire game striking out 3, giving up 12 hits, but only allowing 3 runs.  The sophomore again showed poised by getting out of several jams and keeping the same dominate composure with runners on base.

She was also aided by several defensive plays that halted Blue Streak threats.  The most notable came in the second inning when Falcone got Hays to hit a short pop-up to Monnot at first.  Monnot snagged the ball, then stepped a foot or two to the right, and stepped on the bag for an easy unassisted double play.

Monnot would also be the ignition that kick-started the Leopards four-run fifth.  She singled to right-center, Falcone singled to right, and then Carlee Baumgardner drove home Monnot with a single to shallow right.  After Monnot beat the throw home, Lake threw to second in hopes of tagging out Baumgardner.  However, the relay catch was never completed.  With the ball in the dirt around second, Falcone stormed home from third beating the ensuing throw by seconds.

Next up was Flanigan, who had been waiting over a season to hit a home run.  She crushed a 1-1 pitch that propelled into the top of a pine tree in left-center for a two-run homer.  Baumgardner scored and Flanigan was mobbed at home by her teammates.  9-3 Lady Leopards.

All doubt was removed when Louisville tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning.  A single by Woolf brought home Rice to give the Lady Leps double digits.  Then Swigert singled in Woolf a few batters later to give Louisville an 11-3 lead, the score that would eventually be finalized.

The Lady Leopards are now 9-1 and 5-1 against Federal League foes.  After their second consecutive doubleheader sweep of Lake they are now 12-27 against the Blue Streaks all-time.  Louisville will travel to North Canton on Monday to take on the Hoover Vikings in a battle for what may determine the number one seed in the Massillon District.
