Record Six Leopards Place at State

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdLouisville set a new team record as six Leopards placed during the state tournament. Leopard junior Dominic Hoffarth (138) highlighted the weekend by capturing Louisville’s lone individual state title. Senior Pablo Castro (132) finished as a state runner-up for the second straight season as well.

Other top placers included senior Blake Schaffer (190) in third and senior Cameron Brazek (285) in fourth. Senior Brenden Severs (157) also took sixth and senior Noah Peterson (175) finished 8th.

Hoffarth Captures 138 State Title

Jenny Can Cleaning AdHoffarth, the top ranked wrestler in 138 for Division II, suffered a stunning 7-3 defeat to  in the district quarterfinals a week earlier. He stormed back through consolation to take third place via four consecutive shutouts in which he outscored the opposition 40-0 in the process. Hoffarth carried that momentum from the district tournament into the state tournament this past weekend.

Hoffarth opened up the state tournament by earning a 7-3 decision against #5 ranked Wauseon senior Lawson Grime on Friday. He then won by 16-0 technical fall against unranked John Glenn sophomore Cohen Bunting on Saturday. Later that day, Hoffarth earned a 10-1 major decision against #4 ranked Clyde Lance Overmyer to advance to the championship bout.

Dominic Hoffarth Louisville Leopards Wrestling State Tournament 2022

Dominic Hoffarth earns 6-0 decision vs. Bret Minnick (Tiffin Columbian) to win the 138 title!

The 138 finals featured the top two wrestlers in the state as Hoffarth battled #2 ranked Tiffin Columbian senior Bret Minnick for the crown. Hoffarth took the lead with an early takedown 17 seconds into the match and never looked back. He tacked onto his advantage with a quick escape point to open up the second period to put him ahead 3-0. In the third period, Hoffarth registered another takedown with 40 seconds left to pull ahead 5-0 to all but clinch his first state championship. Hoffarth picked up a penalty point with 20 seconds to go and then celebrated after the clock ticked down to triple zeros.

Hoffarth is the fifth different Leopard wrestler in team history to win an individual state title. Louisville wrestlers have now claimed four individual state championships in the past three state tournaments dating back to 2019 (no tournament in 2020 due to COVID).

Hoffarth scored a team high 24.5 team points to help lead Louisville to its third place finish. Hoffarth ends his junior season with a final record of 43-5.

Castro Runner-Up in 132 for 2nd Straight Year

Castro pinned #20 ranked Claymont junior Elijah Parrish in 4:47 during the opening round of the state tournament. Then Castro earned a narrow 1-0 decision against #3 ranked Medina Buckeye senior Logan Cravatas in the 132 championship quarterfinals. His escape in the second period proved to be the only points in the match.

In the championship semifinals, Castro earned his 43rd consecutive victory on the mat via an 8-3 decision over #6 ranked Licking Valley senior Alijah Stevens. That setup a #1 Vs. #2 matchup for the championship final.

Top ranked Castro was in control early on after recording a takedown of #2 ranked Columbus DeSales junior David McClelland. Momentum shifted in the second period as McClelland choose bottom, tallied an escape point, and then took a 3-2 lead on a takedown of Castro 15 seconds later.

Pablo Castro Louisville Leopards Wrestling State Tournament 2022

Pablo Castro with the early takedown of David McClelland (Columbus DeSales) in the the 132 state title bout.

Castro choose neutral to start the third period , but it was McClelland who recorded a takedown with 57 seconds left in the bout. A penalty against McClelland put Castro within a takedown. But instead it would be McClelland who took control the rest of the way earning 3 nearfall points at the end and claiming the title by an 8-3 decision.

Castro is just the third Leopard in team history to advance to the state championship finals twice. Mike Malcuit finished as 98 AAA runner-up in 1984 before returning in 1986 to win the 126 AAA state title. Davin Rhoads remains the only two-time state champion winning the 126 DII title in 2019 and the 138 DII championship in 2021.

Castro recorded 20 team points for Louisville and finishes the 2021-22 campaign with a 49-3 record.

Schaffer & Brazek Battle Back from QF Losses

Schaffer and Brazek both lost decisions in the championship quarterfinal round before storming back through consolation to advance to their respective third place matches.

Schaffer, ranked #2 in 190 for Division II, opened up the tournament with a 6-0 shutout of #6 ranked St. Paris Graham senior Evan Lykins. Schaffer then dropped a narrow 3-2 decision against #8 ranked Madison Comprehensive junior Hunter Hutcheson to fall to consolation.

Schaffer earned a 21-6 technical fall against unranked Hartley junior Griffin Halenar in his first consolation match. He then took down #5 ranked Poland Seminary senior Dillon Smith by 7-4 decision and #4 ranked Granville junior Carson Miller by 5-1 decision to setup a rematch with Hutcheson in the 190 third place match. This time Schaffer jumped out to an early lead and never trailed en rout to an 11-3 major decision that earned him third place.

Brazek, ranked #7 in 285, dropped a 6-1 decision to eventual state runner-up in #2 ranked Maysville senior Gauge Samson. Brazek then bounced back with a pin of #11 ranked Bellevue senior Brock Nunez early on in the second period. In the consolation quarterfinals, Brazek upset #3 ranked Medina Buckeye junior Todd Allen via a 3-1 decision. Brazek’s upset of Allen propelled him to the 285 third place bout because #6 ranked Woodridge senior Alistair Larson had to bow out with a medical forfeit in the consolation semifinals.

Brazek would fall in the 285 third place match to #4 ranked London senior Thadd Huff via 4-1 decision. Sunday marked the second time Brazek placed at the state tournament after taking 8th in the heavyweight bracket in 2021. He finishes the season with a 46-6 record for LHS.

Early Victories Propel Severs to 6th Again

Severs, ranked #10 in 157, blanked #11 ranked Minerva senior Khail Louive 7-0 in the opening round and then upset #5 ranked Bowling Green junior Mike Kinzel by 7-5 decision in the championship quarterfinals.

Severs would not win again, but his early victories against ranked opponents were good enough to earn him a sixth place finish for the second straight year. Severs also took sixth place in the 182 weight class a season ago. He finishes the season with a mark of 40-12.

Peterson Records 100th Win to Secure 8th

Noah Peterson defeats Bryce Wheatley (NDCL) for 100th career win.

Peterson, ranked #9 in 175, lost a heartbreaker in the championship quarterfinals. #10 ranked Dover senior Brandon Kiser upset him in a 7-5 tie-breaker to knock Peterson down to consolation.

In his opening match in consolation, Peterson built a 3-0 second period lead before holding on to upset #7 ranked NDCL sophomore Bryce Wheatley by 3-2 decision. Peterson notched his 100th career victory with the win and it would eventually earn him 8th place in 175 after not placing in 182 a season ago. Peterson finishes the year with a record of 27-12.

Aurora Passes Louisville for Runner-Up

While St. Paris Graham ran away with their 21st consecutive championship, the Leopards just missed snagging their second straight DII State Runner-Up trophy. Louisville led Aurora 89-87 in team points heading into the championship finals. Hoffarth’s victory put the Leopards up 93-87, but the Greenmen were able to capture state titles from seniors Tyler Lillard (165) and Dylan Fishback (190) to take the DII state runner-up trophy with 95 points.

This is the second best finish Louisville has ever had at state as a team. The Leopards also placed third at the state tournament in 2019.
