The Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the DII Perry District Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Perry High School in Lake County. Louisville crowned two individual district champions and edged out Aurora in team points 194.5-190.0 en rout to claiming their third consecutive DII District Championship.

School Record 9 Leopards Qualify for State

Louisville set a new school record as 9 of their 11 district wrestlers qualified for the state tournament next week at Ohio State. District champions included seniors Pablo Castro (132) and Noah Peterson (175). District Runner-Ups included seniors Brenden Severs (157) and Blake Schaffer (190).

Others qualifying for state and placing third were senior Lacy Harvey (106), sophomore Kolten Barker (113), junior Dylan Rhoads (126), junior Dominic Hoffarth (138), and senior Cameron Brazek (285).

Castro Steamrolls to District Championship

Castro continued to show why he is the #1 ranked wrestler in 132 for Division II. He didn’t see much action on Friday because he pinned both West Geauga senior Thomas Randau and Woodridge senior David Thompson in under a minute.

Castro suffered a heart-wrenching 1-0 loss a year ago in the district championship semifinals, but not on Saturday. Castro was dominate in earning a 13-4 major decision against #17 ranked St. Vincent-St. Mary freshman Braden Dunlap to punch his ticket to state for the third consecutive year. Castro

In the 132 championship final, Castro earned a 5-1 decision against #12 ranked Perry junior Brock Christian to take the title. The win also marked Castro’s 40th consecutive victory on the season. Castro finished with a team best 27 team points as well.

Peterson Upsets Beddow for District Crown

Peterson started his district championship run with a last second pin of Keystone senior Austin Sennhenn on Friday. He then took out #20 ranked Canfield junior Caden Kohout via a 7-5 decision to remain in the championship bracket to start Saturday’s action.

Peterson defeated Edgewood sophomore Zeke Lucas 8-2 to clinch his second straight state birth. In the 175 championship bout, #9 ranked Peterson upset #6 ranked Norton senior Reid Beddow by a narrow 3-2 decision to win the district championship.

Schaffer & Severs Drop Finals Matches Vs. Aurora

The #10 ranked Severs pinned his first three opponents to advance to the 157 championship final. This included pinning #21 ranked St.-Vincent-St. Mary junior Calvin Gwinn in 2:40 and upsetting #7 ranked Ravenna senior Shane Michael by fall in 7:09. Severs would only be outmatched by #8 ranked Aurora senior Ashton Smith who claimed the title with a 10-3 decision.

In similar fashion, the #2 ranked Schaffer pinned his first three opponents to advance to what was one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament. It did not live up to expectations as Schaffer lost by 14-1 major decision against top ranked and undefeated Aurora senior Dylan Fishback.

Severs and Schaffer both matched Peterson with 24 team points.
