Louisville Leopards Wrestling DII State Runner-Up

Louisville 95.0 (2nd Out of 95)

<<< Previous DII Perry District Tournament | Wrestling Schedule

My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the DII State Wrestling Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Marengo Highland High School. Louisville scored 95 team points to finish as Division II State Runner-Up as a team, their best finish in team history.

The Leopards were only outdone by perennial powerhouse St. Paris Graham who captured their 20th consecutive state title in scoring 181.5 team points. The Copley Indians also claimed third place with 78.5 team points and the Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish came in fourth with 74 total team points.

Rhoads Louisville’s 1st Two-Time State Champion

Lingenhoel Group - Arden and Lisa Lingenhoel - Cutler Real Estate AdSenior Davin Rhoads (138) also made history by becoming the first Louisville Leopard Wrestler to win a second individual state title. As a four-time state qualifier, he finished 7th as a freshman in 2018 in 120, won state in 2019 in 126, and was in line for another state championship in 132 before COVID-19 cancelled last year’s state wrestling tournament.

Samantha's Grill AdRhoads dominated his first three foes en rout to punching his ticket to his second straight championship final. The top ranked Rhoads opened his weekend with a 15-2 major decision over #23 ranked C.J. Poole (Columbian). He then earned back-to-back first period falls against #11 ranked Harris Foad (Indian Hill) in the championship quarterfinals and #7 ranked Eddie Neitenbach (Medina Buckeye) in the championship semifinals.

Jenny Can Cleaning AdRhoads met a familiar foe in the championship match. Back on February 6, Rhoads defeated #2 ranked Nick Moore (Graham Local) by a 7-4 decision in the DII OHSWCA Dual Team State Finals. Rhoads trailed Moore 4-2 before rallying in the third period for the Leopards only victory in regulation of their dual match against the Falcons.

Rhoads would have to rally back from an even larger deficit in Sunday’s championship final. Moore jumped out to the early 4-1 lead with a pair of first period takedowns followed by an escape to begin the second period to put him in front 5-1. Rhoads cut his disadvantage in half with a key takedown with 13 seconds left in the second period.

Trailing 5-3, the formula was simple: escape and take the lead with a takedown. The first part of the plan was executed immediately as Rhoads escaped within the first 7 seconds of the third period. He nearly completed the second part of the formula with 48 seconds to go, but the referee’s whistle blew before he could complete his takedown beyond the boundary. Rhoads did not get the takedown he was seeking, but was bailed out by a second stalling call against Moore with 25 seconds to go. That tied the match at 5-5. Neither wrestler would score in the remainder of regulation sending the match into overtime.

The two 138 championship finalists battled on into the overtime period. Finally, with 8 seconds remaining, Rhoads got the takedown he needed to win the match by 7-5 decision in sudden victory.

The title is the 5th individual state championship in Louisville wrestling history and the 3rd in Division II over the past three seasons. Rhoads finishes the 2020-2021 campaign with a record of 26-2 (.929) and ends his four-year varsity career with a record of 158-28 (.849). Dating back to his freshman season, Rhoads has won his last 9 matches at the state tournament and finishes with a 12-2 career record at the state tournament overall.

Castro Takes State Runner-Up After Ultimate Tie-Breaker

Junior Pablo Castro (132) nearly captured his first state title just minutes before Rhoads took the mat for his title bout. Ranked #5, Castro squared off against a familiar opponent in #6 ranked Kyren Butler (Copley). Castro defeated then #2 ranked Butler by a 1-0 decision at the Hephner Memorial Tournament earlier this season. A week ago, the two also faced each other in semifinals of the DII Perry District Tournament. Butler used a late third period reversal to claim a 2-1 decision in that matchup.

After a scoreless first period, Castro took the lead on a reversal 28 seconds into the second period. Butler returned the favor with a reversal of his own in the final second of the period to knot the match at 2-2 heading into the third. Butler choose bottom and Castro surrendered the escape point to begin the period in neutral position. Butler fought hard to hold his lead, but was eventually penalized for stalling with only 12 seconds remaining, which tied the match at 3-3 heading into overtime.

Neither wrestler managed to score in the initial overtime period. In the second overtime period, Castro deferred to Butler who choose the bottom. Castro was poised to hold Butler from escaping, but was called for stalling with 8 seconds remaining in the period. Castro notched the match back up at 4-4 in the third overtime with an escape that came with just 5 seconds left on the clock.

With the score still tied, the match headed into an ultimate tie-breaker. Castro started on the bottom needing an escape to claim a state championship, but he was unable to break free of Butler’s grasp. After a controversial whistle with just 4 seconds remaining, Butler held on to claim the state championship and Castro had to settle for state runner-up in what proved to be the closest match of the entire tournament.

Castro is the third state runner-up in Louisville Wrestling program history. The other Leopard state runner-ups include Rick Crislip (185) in 1975 and Mike Malcuit (98) in 1985, who both accomplished their feat in Class AAA.

Castro was not awarded an easy path to the finals. Although ranked fifth in the state in 132, Castro was still considered the underdog in each of his first three state tournament matches. He earned decisions over #4 ranked Alessia Elliott (St. Vincent-St. Mary) 3-0 and #2 ranked Nick Hart (St. Paris Graham) 4-1. In the championship semifinals, Castro shutout #3 ranked Koen Kish (St. Clairsville) in winning via a 9-0 major decision.

Castro finishes the season with a record of 35-4.

Adams and Lautzenheiser Overcome Quarterfinal Setbacks

Both Dan Adams (113) and Garett Lautzenheiser (126) overcame championship quarterfinal setbacks to finish in third place in their respective weight classes.

Adams Upsets Sagaris to Key Run to Third Place

The #4 ranked Adams began the weekend with an impressive 15-7 major decision over #15 Josh Carman (Carrollton) in the opening round. However, Adams dropped a 6-3 decision to #11 ranked Malachi O’Leary (Wyoming) to drop down in the bracket to second consolation.

Adams ripped off four straight decisions in consolation to claim third place. He defeated #10 ranked Chapman Reece (Jonathan Alder) by 8-2 decision and #19 ranked Cooper Rathburn (Bishop Hartley) by 5-1 decision to advance to the consolation semifinals. There he upset #2 ranked Robbie Sagaris (Aurora) via a 6-2 decision.

Adams then rematched with Carman in the third place match. The sequel was not as easy, but Adams still managed to blank Carman 4-0 to capture third place. Adams finishes the season with a 31-7 record.

Lautzenheiser’s 73-match Win Streak Snapped

Like Adams, senior Garett Lautzenheiser (126) began the tournament with a strong opening match. The top ranked wrestler in 126 pinned unranked Cohen Bunting (John Glenn) in just 46 seconds to extend his team record winning streak to 73 consecutive matches.

However, disaster struck for Lautzenheiser in his championship quarterfinal match against #10 ranked Alijah Stevens (Licking Valley). In a high scoring opening period, the two wrestlers battled to a 6-6 tie. After an escape by Stevens, Lautzenheiser retook the lead at 8-7 with a takedown. Stevens then re-tied the match at 8-8 with an escape. The two opponents locked arms, Stevens recorded the final takedown, and quickly positioned Lautzenheiser on his back. Stevens won by pin a few seconds later ending Lautzenheiser’s perfect season and a bid for a second state championship. Stevens would go on to finish as the 126 state runner-up.

Lautzenheiser defeated four top 11 ranked wrestlers in his consolation matchups. He defeated #4 Jayden Mayes (Bellevue) by 5-1 decision and #5 Te`Andre Allen (Orange) by 9-4 decision. Lautzenheiser then shutout #7 Canyon Wells (Copley) by 10-0 major decision in a rematch of their DII Perry 126 District Final matchup. Lautzenheiser followed with another major decision in the 126 third place match. He defeated #11 ranked Joseph Eckelberry (Tri-Valley) by the count of 11-1 to claim third place.

Lautzenheiser ends his senior season with a record of 39-1 (.975) and his varsity career as the Leopards all-time duel victories leader with a mark of 173-12 (.935).

Leopards Set Team Record With 6 State Placers

The Louisville Leopards Wrestling program continues to raise the bar year in and year out. This year 6 of the Leopards 8 state qualifiers placed at the state tournament, another team record. Other Louisville placers included Brenden Severs (182) and Cameron Brazek (285).

Severs Takes 6th in 182

Severs, ranked #6 in 182, recorded decisions in his first two matches of the tournament to advance to the championship semifinals. Severs defeated #8 ranked Colton Doyle (Clinton-Massie) 9-2 and blanked #10 ranked (at 170) Jonathan Potts (Beaver Local) by 1-0 decision.

Severs dropped his championship semifinal match by 10-0 major decision to #4 ranked Zayne Lehman (Revere). Lehman would go on to win the 182 state championship. Severs would run into even higher ranked opponents in consolation falling to #3 ranked Cole Hivnor (Lake Catholic) by 11-2 major decision and then #1 ranked Justin Mayes (Bellevue) by 6-2 decision in the 182 5th place match.

Severs placed 6th in the state in 182 and finishes the season with a record fo 36-6.

Brazek Places 8th in Heavyweight

Brazek, ranked #9 in 285, opened the tournament with a first period pin against #23 ranked Jake Welch (Vincent Warren). However, Brazek would suffer a 9-2 setback in the heavyweight championship quarterfinals against #4 ranked Thadd Huff (London).

Brazek responded with a third period fall against #28 ranked Alex Griffith (Galion) to ensure placement. He then dropped decisions to #10 ranked Alistar Larson (Woodridge) 3-2 and #13 ranked Logan Morris (Sheridan) 7-2 in the 7th place match.

Brazek placed 8th in the state in 285 and finishes 32-8 on the year.
