Grove Appliance Alliance Ohio AdThe Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed in the Division II, Regional 12 Team Tournament held at Canfield High School Wednesday Night. Louisville defeated the Lisbon Beaver Local Beavers 42-24 in the Regional Semifinals before dropping a 33-31 heartbreaker against the host Canfield Cardinals. With these results, the Leopards are now 7-4 on the season and finish as Regional Runner-Ups.

Regional Semifinal:
Louisville 42, Lisbon Beaver Local 24

The Leopards upset the Sub-Region 12-A Top Seed Beaver Local Beavers 42-24 in the Region 12 Semifinals to punch their ticket to the Regional Title match against the host Canfield Cardinals.

Louisville Leopards Navy Blue Hoodie Established 1924 - Beatty's Sports Fall 2017Louisville dominated out of the gate in taking a 12-0 lead off pins by Garett Lautzenheiser (106) and Ryan Jakubiak (113). After surrendering a forfeit in the 120 match to Beaver Local’s Cole McComas, Davin Rhoads (126) got the Leopards back to their winning ways with a 5-0 shutout to put LHS up 15-6.

The Beavers answered back when Skyler Lasure edged out a 7-6 decision in the 132 match. Then Louisville extended their advantage to 24-9 with a pin by Daniel Kennedy (138) and a 12-9 decision from Jax Leonard (145).

Beaver Local won 3 of the next 4 matchups to cut their deficit to 30-24. Jared Wright (152) earned a 6-1 decision and both Logan Krulik (160) and Chad Mays (182) pinned their LHS opponents. The lone Leopard winner through that segment was Brent Paulus (170) who claimed victory by fall as well.

With the match up for grabs, Louisville won each of the final three matches to advance to their first ever team regional final. Zach Thatcher (195) earned a 6-4 decision, Blake Robbins (220) won by decision 7-2, and Riley Brendle (285) capped off the night with a pin in the heavyweight match.

The 42-24 Leopards victory also avenged their earlier 33-23 loss to Beaver Local on opening night.

Regional Championship:
Canfield 33, Louisville 31

It was a tale of two runs in a momentum filled Regional Championship match between Louisville and host Canfield.

Grove Appliance Alliance Ohio AdThe Leopards won 6 of the first 8 matches to build a commanding 25-6 lead. Davin Rhoads (120) and Jax Leonard (152) each won by pin to lead Louisville. Carter Mickley (138) also earned a 17-7 major decision and the trio of Garett Lautzenheiser (106), Ryan Jakubiak (113), and Quintin Scheetz (132) all won by decision for LHS. Canfield’s two decisions included McCoy Watkins (126) 4-2 and Eric El-Hayek (145) 5-3.

The momentum shifted in favor of the host team and the Leopards lead quickly evaporated. The Cardinals would win the next 5 matches in scoring 27 straight points to clinch the match at 33-25. Ben Cutrer (160) won by pin to start the run before Anthony D’Alesio (170) earned a hard fought 7-4 decision. Pins by David Crawford (182) and Nick Crawford (195) gave the Cardinals their first lead of the match at 27-25. Finally, Tyler Stein (220) put the match away with another pin after that to send the Canfield faithful into a frenzy.

With the match decided, the Cardinals intentionally forfeited the heavyweight match to the Leopards Riley Brendle to finalize the score at 33-31. Canfield heads to the OHSAA Team Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday, February 11 at Ohio State’s St. John Arena in Columbus. Louisville ends their deepest run since the Team Tournament was established in 2013.
