The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team defeated the visiting Canton South Wildcats 8-2 Wednesday Evening at Andy Aljancic Field. With the victory, Louisville improves to 13-12 on the season.
Warner Improves to 5-0
Junior starting pitcher Anthony Warner threw 6 innings, surrendered just 1 earned run on 5 hits, and struck out 3 to record the victory for the Leopards. Warner improves his perfect mark to 5-0 on the season on the mound for the season. Senior pitcher Tony Brahler also worked a scoreless seventh inning and struck out 1.
Popick Goes 2-for-3, Morley Delivers 2-Run Single
Junior shortstop JT Popick led Louisville at the plate by batting 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored at the top of the lineup. Popick scored the Leopards first run of the game when he came home via senior second baseman Broc Pickens’ sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the first inning.
Louisville took the lead three batters later when sophomore designated hitter Connor Morley worked the count full before delivering a 2-out, 2-run single to left field. Sophomore center fielder Charlie Roberts and senior courtesy runner Evan Kroah both scored on the play to give the Leopards a 3-1 lead that they would never relinquish.
Louisville Takes Advantage of South Mistakes
Louisville continued to add to their lead throughout and took advantage of multiple Wildcats mistakes in the process. Popick singled to center in the bottom of the second and an error allowed junior left fielder Connor Adelman to score on the same play. In the fourth inning, Popick singled again and then later made it home via a wild pitch.
In the next at-bat, senior first baseman Ryan Aljancic drove in Pickens on a 2-out RBI double to left field that put the Leopards in front 6-2. The double would prove to be the only extra base hit of the contest for either team.
Louisville tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Morley walked to start the frame and later scored on a passed ball. Finally, Roberts drove in Adelman on a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Leopards ahead 8-2.
Wildcats Out-Hit Leopards 6-5
Lead-off hitter and second baseman Aiden Leahy scored both of the Wildcats runs. He singled to start the game and later came home when first baseman Nick Stauffer reached base via error with two outs in the opening inning.
Third baseman AJ Pierson recorded the only Canton South RBI of the game when his third inning fielder’s choice brought home Leahy from third to chop the LHS lead in half at 4-2.
