Canfield Cardinals at Louisville Leopards Girls Basketball Highlights 2020

Canfield 48, Louisville 34

The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team fell to the visiting Canfield Cardinals 48-34 on Senior Night Monday at Louisville High School. The loss snaps the Lady Leopards 4-game winning streak as they drop to 13-6 on the season.

Paige Cole scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to to lead Louisville. Sherilynn Mullett scored all 8 of her points within the first 4 minutes of the contest. Kelsey Adelman and Kendal Loy also added 3 points each.

My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdThe Leopards gave the Cardinals fits with their full court press at the start of the contest. Mullett rolled to the rack to break the ice. She then stole the ensuing inbound pass while laying it in for two more. On the next Louisville possession, Kayla Gibson drove, stopped, and popped just outside the right of the lane. The ball went off the glass and in to put LHS ahead 6-0 with 5:48 remaining in the first quarter.

The advantage forced a Canfield timeout and the two teams traded baskets. The Leopards went ahead 12-6 on a Cole’s put-back with a little over two minutes left in the first, but the Cardinals cut the deficit to 12-10 by the end of the period.

Two quick three-pointers by the Cardinals Morgan Carey and Grace Mangapora quickly erased that lead tying the game at 16-16. 

That pair of triples was the beginning of 28-2 Canfield run spanning nearly 14 minutes of game time from 6:26 in the second to 0:32.4 seconds left in the third quarter. Adelman split a pair of free throws in the final minute of the third to snap an 18-0 Cardinal run. The Lady Leopards did not connect from the field during the third quarter,

A Gibson to Cole connection finally broke the Louisville shooting spell from the floor with 7:17 to go in the fourth. The same duo hooked up to convert their previous field goal 11:11 of game time prior. The Lady Leopards would go on to outscore the Lady Cardinals 15-10 in the fourth quarter, but they could not overcome Canfield’s mid-game run.

The Cardinals were led by Mangapora who hit 3 three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points. The Canfield Senior notched her 1000th career point on a buzzer beater to end the first half. Carey also scored 7 and Summer Sammarone added 6.

The Leopards have now dropped their last 5 meetings against the Cardinals including the last 2 at home. Canfield now leads the all-time series 10-3 and they hold a 3-2 record in games played at Louisville.

UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next host the Jackson Polar Bears to conclude the regular season on Wednesday, February 12. JV will begin at 6:00 PM and Varsity will follow around 7:30 PM.
