My Fit Life Personal Trainer Side AdThe Louisville Leopards JV Football Team scored three times in the opening quarter and never looked back, blanking the visiting Canfield Cardinals 35-0 Saturday morning at Louisville Leopards Stadium.

Sophomore quarterback Maddux Edgein completed 9 of 13 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns while running for 44 yards and another score. Sophomore wide receiver Ryker Youngen caught six passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns, converted all five extra-point kicks, and blocked a punt that helped Louisville seize control early.

The Leopards finished with 349 yards on only 33 offensive plays, an average of 10.6 yards per snap. Their defense was just as impressive, holding the Cardinals to 91 total yards and 15 yards rushing while recording four sacks, nine additional tackles for loss, and two interceptions.

Junior Stephen Hann returned one of those interceptions 47 yards for a touchdown. Sophomore Jayden Haught made the other pick and added four tackles for loss and a forced fumble as Louisville improved to 5-2. Canfield fell to 3-3-1.

Blocked Punt Sets Up Edgein-to-Youngen Strike

West Main Vet Clinic AdCanfield created the first break of the game on Louisville’s opening snap. Edgein found Hann for a 15-yard completion, but sophomore Alex McCarthy knocked the ball loose and Hudson Moser recovered for the Cardinals.

Sophomore quarterback Gino Crisucci opened Canfield’s possession with a 14-yard keeper. The drive unraveled from there. Crisucci mishandled a snap and recovered it before sophomore Joey Griffiths stopped him for a 5-yard loss. Two plays later, sophomore Jeremy Wooten flew into the backfield for a sack on 3rd-and-15.

Youngen then broke through the Canfield protection and blocked the punt. Sophomore Anderson Jones secured the ball out of the air at the Louisville 41, giving the Leopards another opportunity.

Canfield’s Cam Toth sacked Edgein for a 7-yard loss setting up a 3rd-and-12. Edgein looked to his right and found Youngen uncovered downfield for a 61-yard touchdown. Youngen kicked the extra point to put Louisville ahead 7-0 with 6:10 remaining in the first quarter. The three-play, 59-yard drive took 1:29.

Hann Pick-Six Doubles Louisville’s Lead

Gionino's Pizzeria Oakwood - Mobile AdThe Cardinals experienced more trouble on their next possession. Crisucci mishandled the first-down snap before throwing the ball away, and a miscommunication on a jet sweep sent the ball carrier into his own running back. Wooten was waiting in the backfield and finished the play for a 2-yard loss.

On third down, Crisucci looked deep toward midfield. Hann read the throw, intercepted it, and raced down the left sideline. He dragged a would-be tackler for the final 7 yards before crossing just inside the pylon to complete a 47-yard touchdown return. Youngen’s extra point extended the Leopard lead to 14-0 with 4:55 left in the opening quarter.

Leopards Pull Ahead 21-0 in Opening Quarter

Mongiardo Power Wash AdLouisville forced another punt on Canfield’s ensuing series. Haught delivered a hard hit for a 1-yard tackle for loss, and sophomore Kaleb Brown diagnosed a screen pass on the next third down. Brown made first contact before Hann and Haught finished the receiver for a 2-yard loss.

The Leopards needed only 29 seconds to travel 60 yards after the punt. Edgein found Youngen on the left sideline for a 21-yard gain to the Canfield 39, then scrambled right for 13 more yards. On the next play, Edgein fired toward the back-left corner of the end zone. Youngen elevated over the coverage and hauled in the 26-yard touchdown pass. His third extra point of the opening quarter made it 21-0 with 2:02 remaining.

Leopards Turn Away Canfield at the Goal Line

Canfield mounted its best drive of the morning late in the first quarter. The possession began with another troubled exchange between Crisucci and sophomore Victor Flores Jr. Crisucci recovered the bouncing ball and tried to advance it, but Wooten delivered the hit and Haught ripped it loose again. Moser scooped it up, and LHS junior John Lowery tracked him down from behind to complete a 1-yard loss.

Crisucci recovered with a 42-yard slant to McCarthy that moved Canfield to the Louisville 24. He then hit sophomore Aidan McFarland for 14 yards over the middle to setup goal-to-go for the Cardinals at the 5.

The end of the quarter gave Louisville’s defense a chance to regroup, and the Leopard front took over after the teams changed ends. Wooten blitzed from the right side and met the running back as he received the shotgun handoff for a 5-yard loss. After an incompletion, Wooten dropped Crisucci for a 9-yard sack to create 4th-and-goal from the 19.

Louisville sent pressure again on fourth down. Jones came from the left side and combined with Wooten for another sack, this time for a 5-yard loss. The stand gave the Leopards possession at their own 24 and preserved the shutout.

Leopards Threaten Again Before Halftime

Sophomore Karter Pawley helped Louisville move the chains on the next drive before Moser sacked Edgein. The Leopards faced 3rd-and-20 when Edgein lofted a fade down the left sideline. Youngen made the catch for a 38-yard gain to the Canfield 30.

Edgein followed with a 12-yard run to the 18, but Toth dropped Pawley for a 3-yard loss and an incompletion brought out the field-goal unit. Youngen’s 35-yard attempt just missed wide right with 3:38 left in the half, keeping the margin at 21-0.

Canfield picked up two first downs on its final meaningful possession of the half. Crisucci completed a 17-yard pass to No. 31 on 3rd-and-17 and later moved the chains with a run. Haught made another tackle for loss earlier in the drive, and sophomore Manny Mayle eventually recorded a sack that forced the Cardinals to punt on 4th-and-14.

Louisville carried its 21-point advantage into halftime.

Haught Interception Leads to Edgein Touchdown

The Leopard defense immediately created another scoring chance to open the second half. After Crisucci was stopped for no gain, he threw to his right on the next snap and Haught intercepted the pass. His 2-yard return gave Louisville possession at the Canfield 45.

Pawley gained 9 yards on the first play. Edgein then faked a handoff to Pawley moving left before keeping the ball and breaking into open space to the right. Jones delivered a key block downfield, and Edgein finished the 36-yard touchdown run untouched. Youngen’s extra point made it 28-0 with 8:25 remaining in the third quarter. The two-play scoring drive covered 45 yards in 43 seconds.

Louisville’s defense forced a three-and-out, and Hann returned the punt 24 yards to the Canfield 27. The Leopards again needed only two snaps. Edgein hit Wooten in the left flat, and Wooten turned the completion into a 14-yard gain to the 13. Pawley took the next handoff to the right and crossed the goal line for a 13-yard touchdown with 5:34 left in the third quarter, activating the running clock for the rest of the game.

Youngen converted his fifth extra point to make it 35-0.

Louisville Defense Finishes the Shutout

Haught added another tackle for loss on Canfield’s next possession, helping Louisville force its fifth punt. The Leopards moved back into scoring range when Haught ran twice for a first down and Edgein connected with Wooten for 21 yards to the Canfield 15. Canfield’s No. 31 intercepted Edgein’s next pass in the end zone for a touchback.

The Cardinals earned a first down on an 11-yard run by No. 28, but their final possession stalled after Flores fumbled on 3rd-and-2. Crisucci recovered the ball for a 3-yard loss, and the fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

Haught ran for 16 yards and another first down on Louisville’s final series, then followed with a 7-yard gain. He later reached the end zone on a 13-yard carry, but a holding penalty erased the touchdown. The Leopards ran two more plays before the clock expired.

Louisville did not punt in the game, scored touchdowns on four offensive possessions, and added Hann’s pick-six. The defense allowed only six first downs, held Canfield to 0.6 yards per rush, and limited the Cardinals to 2.2 yards per offensive play.

Edgein Accounts for 255 Yards and Three Touchdowns

Edgein finished with 255 total yards and three touchdowns. In addition to his 211 yards and two scores through the air, he carried six times for 44 yards and a touchdown. Pawley led Louisville’s rushing attack with 50 yards and a score on eight carries, while Haught added 44 yards on six attempts all in the fourth quarter.

Youngen accounted for 173 all-purpose yards with 161 receiving and 12 on a punt return. He caught six passes, scored twice, made all five extra points, and blocked a punt. Wooten added two receptions for 35 yards, and Hann made one catch for 15 yards to go with his pick-six and 24 punt-return yards.

Wooten led the pass rush with 2.5 sacks and two additional tackles for loss. Mayle recorded one sack, while Jones shared another with Wooten. Haught’s four tackles for loss led the team, and Griffiths, Hann, and Lowery each added one. Hann also broke up a pass, and Haught forced a fumble in addition to his interception.

Crisucci completed 5 of 17 passes for 76 yards and was intercepted twice. He finished with no net rushing yards on 14 carries after Louisville’s four sacks were applied. McCarthy’s 42-yard reception was Canfield’s longest offensive play. Canfield only gained 49 total yards outside of that play.

UP NEXT: The Leopards JV will next travel to take on the Green Bulldogs on Saturday, October 10. Game time is set for 10:00 AM from Green Memorial Stadium.
