Louisville JV Comeback Falls Short at Lake 21-19 – JV Football

The Louisville Leopards JV Football Team came within a two-point conversion of completing a late comeback, but the host Lake Blue Streaks stopped the tying run and held on for a 21-19 victory Saturday morning at Blue Streaks Stadium.
Junior wide receiver Stephen Hann caught four passes for a game-high 105 yards and two touchdowns, including a 76-yard score with 1:15 remaining that gave the Leopards one final chance to pull even. Sophomore quarterback Maddux Edgein completed 9 of 19 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns while adding a team-best 36 yards on the ground.
Louisville out-gained Lake 226-145, earned a 9-4 advantage in first downs, and held the Blue Streaks to 3.5 yards per play. The Leopard defense registered four sacks, five additional tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
The difference was Lake’s ability to capitalize on takeaways. The Blue Streaks intercepted three passes, returning two of them to the Louisville 17, and scored all 21 of their points on those turnovers. Louisville finished with four turnovers to Lake’s one as the Leopards fell to 4-2 and the Blue Streaks remained unbeaten at 6-0.

Edgein-to-Hann Caps Opening Drive
Louisville put together a balanced 10-play, 65-yard march on the game’s opening possession. Facing 3rd-and-6, Edgein kept the ball and scampered for 8 yards to move the chains. He then connected with sophomore Jeremy Wooten for 12 yards over the middle before going back to Wooten for a 24-yard completion on 3rd-and-9.
An 8-yard Edgein run put the Leopards in goal-to-go territory. On 3rd-and-2, Edgein took the snap and quickly fired left to Hann at the 1. Hann stretched the ball across the goal line to complete an 8-yard touchdown reception with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. Sophomore Ryker Youngen added the extra point to give Louisville a 7-0 lead after a drive that consumed 5:14.
Leopard Defense Stops Blue Streaks on Downs
The Leopard defense immediately gave the offense an opportunity to add to its advantage. Hann broke up a pass on Lake’s first play, and sophomore Anderson Jones stormed into the backfield to stop quarterback Brody Beatty for a 1-yard loss on 4th-and-1. The stand gave Louisville possession at the Lake 43.
Penalties derailed the promising field position. Back-to-back Lake encroachment penalties initially handed the Leopards a first down, but a Louisville personal foul and two later holding calls eventually created 3rd-and-31. Trevari Brown intercepted the next pass near the left sideline and crossed the field on a 52-yard return to the Louisville 17.
Lake Turns First Interception Into the Lead
Lake converted the short field with a three-play, 17-yard scoring drive that lasted 1:36. On 3rd-and-3, Beatty rolled to his left and found Cohen Coblentz in the back corner of the end zone. Coblentz reached back with his fingertips and made a diving 10-yard touchdown catch.
Louisville was flagged for offside on the extra-point attempt, and Lake elected to put its offense back on the field from the shorter distance. Mark Whytsell plunged across the goal line for the two-point conversion, putting the Blue Streaks ahead 8-7 with 8:06 remaining in the second quarter.
The Leopards picked up one first down on their next possession when Edgein squeezed a 16-yard pass to Youngen through tight coverage. Kahner Adelman and Brody Kutzera each recorded tackles for loss during the drive, however, and Louisville was eventually forced to punt.
Youngen then dropped Brown for a 3-yard loss on a swing pass to begin Lake’s next series. Two plays later, Jones shot straight through the middle of the line and sacked the quarterback for a 9-yard loss on 3rd-and-13. Ethan Hembury’s ensuing punt traveled only 13 yards, giving Louisville the ball in Lake territory.
Pawley Restores the Louisville Lead
Louisville took advantage of the short field with a four-play, 30-yard drive that lasted 1:05. Edgein immediately attacked the middle of the field, finding Hann for a 19-yard completion that put the Leopards in goal-to-go territory. Dawson Garber and Whytsell combined to drop Louisville for a 1-yard loss on the next play, but sophomore Karter Pawley answered with an inspired run.
Pawley took the handoff to the right, shook off two tackle attempts, and powered through a final defender at the goal line for a 9-yard touchdown. Edgein tried to run in the conversion, but Alexander Toregas stopped him inches short of the goal line to keep Louisville’s lead at 13-8 with 1:58 left in the half.
The Leopard defense forced a punt when Pawley sacked Xavier Kinder and knocked the ball loose for an 11-yard loss on 3rd-and-5. William Bailey recovered the fumble for Lake, but the Blue Streaks still faced 4th-and-16.
Lake Uses Late Interception to Score in Final Seconds
Louisville took possession with little time remaining, but Andrew Johnson intercepted Edgein’s pass over the middle at the Lake 39 and returned it 44 yards to the Louisville 17. The Blue Streaks had just 20 seconds to work with.
Sophomore Parker Gomez won up front and sacked Beatty for a 5-yard loss on first down. Hann then broke up a pass in the end zone to bring up 3rd-and-15 with eight seconds left. Beatty rolled left on the next snap and found Brown on the left side of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown with only two seconds remaining. Lake needed just three plays and 18 seconds to cover the 17 yards. Camden Arthurs kicked the extra point to send the Blue Streaks into halftime with a 15-13 lead—the same halftime score as the varsity game between the programs the previous night.
Leopard Defense Creates Second-Half Chances
Lake opened the third quarter with four straight handoffs to Lucas Abrigg, including a 2-yard gain on 4th-and-1. Pawley dropped Abrigg for a 1-yard loss on the next snap, but Kinder later rolled left on 3rd-and-4 and completed a pass to Brown for a gain of 28.
Wooten refused to let Lake finish the play. He stripped Brown, and Edgein recovered the fumble at the Louisville 20 to end the drive.
Sophomore Jayden Haught ran for 10 yards and a first down on Louisville’s next play, but the Leopards could not build on it and Youngen eventually punted. Lake took over at midfield and nearly suffered a disastrous loss when a snap sailed over Kinder’s head. Kinder recovered the bouncing ball and found a seam, turning the broken play into a 5-yard gain.
The Blue Streaks received a first down when Louisville jumped offside on 3rd-and-5, but another high snap helped the Leopards regain control of the series. This one sailed over Beatty’s head, and Hann dropped him for an 11-yard loss. Beatty answered with a 17-yard completion to Garber, but Wooten charged in from the right defensive end spot on 3rd-and-4 and brought down Shane Greenfelder for a 2-yard loss. Beatty’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, giving the ball back to Louisville.
Beatty Interception Sets Up His Own Go-Ahead Score
Edgein moved the chains with a 3-yard sneak on 3rd-and-2, but Brody Kutzera, Jameson Hall, and Gavin Constantine combined for a 1-yard tackle for loss later in the possession. On 3rd-and-8, Beatty intercepted Edgein’s throw over the middle and was tackled immediately at the Lake 35.
Lake converted the takeaway into what proved to be the winning touchdown, covering 65 yards in four plays and 1:39. On 3rd-and-3, Whytsell shot through a hole, cut to his right, and raced down the sideline for a 37-yard gain to the Louisville 21. Beatty followed a block by Josiah Terhune on the next snap, ran through the right side, and powered through a tackle near the goal line for a 21-yard touchdown with 6:29 remaining.
Mack Crespo mishandled the snap on the extra-point attempt and rolled left before throwing toward the end zone. Wooten intercepted the conversion pass to keep Louisville within one score at 21-13.
Lake Can’t Take Advantage of Hall’s Fumble Recovery
Lake forced one more turnover on Louisville’s next possession. Kutzera and Adelman combined to stop Haught for a 2-yard loss before an exchange miscue put the ball on the turf. Hall recovered at the Louisville 30.
The Leopard defense refused to let the short field turn into points. Four straight Charlie Frank carries netted only 8 yards, including a 4-yard loss when Gomez met him in the backfield. Lake eventually lined up for a 36-yard field-goal attempt, but the timing of the snap and hold broke down. Crespo ran left for only 1 yard, and Louisville took over at its own 18 with 2:03 remaining.
Hann’s 76-Yard Touchdown Gives Leopards One Final Chance
Louisville faced 3rd-and-4 on its final possession when Edgein looked left and spotted Hann running behind the secondary. Edgein delivered the pass in stride near midfield, and Hann went untouched the rest of the way for a 76-yard touchdown that pulled the Leopards within 21-19 with 1:15 left. The three-play, 82-yard scoring drive took only 48 seconds.
A Lake penalty moved the two-point try half the distance to the goal. After a Louisville timeout, Pawley took the handoff, but Andy Zalewski made first contact behind the line of scrimmage. Evan Phillips and Jacoby Blosser helped finish the stop before Pawley could reach the goal line, preserving Lake’s two-point lead.
Louisville had no timeouts remaining, allowing the Blue Streaks to close the game with two kneel-downs.
Edgein Accounts for 199 Yards and Hann 105 Receiving Yards
Hann finished with four receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Wooten added three catches for 39 yards, while Youngen caught two passes for 19 yards. Edgein accounted for 199 total yards with 163 passing and 36 rushing.
Pawley finished with 12 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Haught added 15 yards on six attempts as Louisville ran 26 times for 63 yards.
Louisville’s four sacks came from Jones, Pawley, Gomez, and Hann. Pawley forced one fumble, Wooten forced two, and Edgein recovered one. Hann also recorded two pass breakups. In addition to their sacks, Jones, Youngen, Pawley, Wooten, and Gomez each made a separate tackle for loss.
Beatty and Whytsell Lead Lake
Whytsell led Lake’s ground game with 39 yards on two carries, while Abrigg gained 16 yards on five attempts. Beatty completed 3 of 7 passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on the ground. Kinder completed 3 of 4 passes for 32 yards.
