Baseball Tournament Game Vs. Coventry Suspended Again

Baseball:

Coventry 2, Louisville 1, Bot. of 4th

The Leopards played longer than two pitches Friday evening, but once again could not complete their Sectional Final game against the Coventry Comets.  With a runner on third, one out, and Coventry leading 2-1, the home plate umpire pointed to the sky and called the game due to lightning.  A few minutes later a downpour erupted from the unpredictable dark skies.

Earlier in the game the wind was blowing out to left field and the clouds were moving East to West at times.  Coventry took advantage of that when Smith hit a 2-run homer to left field to give the Comets a 2-0 opening inning lead.  The home run was the only hit that Leopards’ pitcher Dillon Stertzbach gave up in four innings pitched as he sent five Comets down on strikes.

Mike Kelly and Jeremy White answered with singles in the bottom half of the frame to put runners on the corners.  Then a Jon Crank groundout brought home Kelly to cut the Comets’ lead in half.

The drama started in the bottom of the second inning when Jake Duvall doubled in Christian Duckworth.  After some discussion, the umpire determined that the bat Duvall was using was not on the list and thus illegal.  Consequently Duvall was called out, tossed from the game, and Head Coach Jason Siegfried was automatically called out of the game as well.  These penalties all flow in accordance with the OHSAA’s rules.  Louisville failed to score in the inning or the rest of the night.

In the fourth inning, Duckworth doubled to left field and then was advanced to third by Shawn Adams on a ground out.  Riley Groves batted next and worked the count to 1-2 before the game was called.  The Leopards and Comets will resume at 10 AM tomorrow morning.

Resume Date: The Leps will finished their game with Coventry tomorrow (Saturday, May 13) at 10:00 AM.
