Alumni Leopards Blank Crestwood 22-0
FULL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS:
Louisville Alumni 22, Crestwood Alumni 0
The Louisville Leopards Alumni defense stood firm in the muggy 95 degree weather Saturday night and produced a 22-0 shutout of the Crestwood Red Devils Alumni. Gary Whaley led the offensive by completing 8-of-17 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown, while adding 38 more yards on the ground. James Whaley led Louisville with 10 tackles on defense.
The Whaley’s led the offensive charge in directing the Leopards to an early first quarter score. Quarterback Gary Whaley began the 53 yard drive with a 12 yard run up the middle. Then, runningback Brian Whaley had runs of 14, 13, and also a 4 yard run on a 4th-and-1 from the 26. On the seventh play of the drive, Gary Whaley found Bill Poyser in the left corner of the endzone to make it 6-0 Leopards.
That score was all that would be needed as the Louisville defensive was merciless against Crestwood for the remainder of the evening. The Red Devils netted just 68 yards against the stone-walled Leopards and averaged only 2.0 yards per rushing attempt. The Poyser brothers, Marcus and Joe, were a menace all night long as they each recorded 8 tackles. Justyn Beadling also had 8 tackles, while Matt Schooley had 9.
Crestwood’s greatest scoring threat came near the end of the first quarter. A 17-yard Red Devil completion put them on the Louisville 24. After driving all the way to the Leopard 13, a 15-yard penalty was accessed driving them back to the 28. That’s when the Leopards charged in for the kill. Schooley burst into the backfield and wrapped up the Crestwood quarterback at the 40-yard-line. In an attempt to get rid of the ball, the quarterback fumbled. There to scoop it off the turf was Louisville’s Joe Henderson who broke a few tackles and ran it into the North Endzone. But yellow laundry at midfield nullified the touchdown and the ball was placed back on the Crestwood 45-yard-line. The penalty would prove to be costly as Louisville turned the ball over on downs after driving to the Crestwood 6.
After the Louisville defense forced a three-and-out, the Leopard offense began at the Red Devil 37. A 25-yard pass from Gary Whaley to Dan Westlake on 3rd-and-7 keyed the drive for the Leopards. Brian Whaley would then score on the next play from 7 yards away before running in the two point conversion off a pitch from Gary Whaley. Brian Whaley finished the evening as the game’s leading rusher with 7 carries for 55 yards. Louisville led at the half 14-0.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Leopards put together an 8 play, 74 yard drive to start the fourth. The Leopards had five plays that went for double digit yardage and Gary Whaley hit receivers Mike Aljancic, Cory Fausnight, and Ben Schmucker. Westlake also ran for 30 of his 34 yards on the drive that he ended by charging forward for an 18 yard touchdown.
After that, a fake extra point attempt worked to perfection as Anthony Milano froze Crestwood defenders by teeing up the ball for a few seconds. He then flipped to Tyler Couto who ran a sweep to the left before crossing the corner of the goal line to complete the two-point attempt.
After a few more possessions, the Leopards Alumni celebrated a 22-0 victory. Both Gary Whaley and Dan Westlake were named the Players of the Game by the Press Box.
