The #14 seed Louisville Leopards Baseball Team run-ruled the visiting Maple Heights Mustangs 24-1 in five innings during their DIII Northeast 5 Sectional Final on a brisk, rainy Wednesday evening at Andy Aljancic Field. Trevor Burick, Jimi Crilow, and Landyn Fohner combined for a no-hitter, while the Leopards tied a school record for most runs scored in a game.
With the victory, Louisville improves to 15-9 on the season and advances to play at #11 Canfield in the DIII Northeast 5 District Semifinals on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:00 PM.
Burick, Crilow, & Fohner Combine for No-Hitter
Louisville pitchers Trevor Burick, Jimi Crilow, and Landyn Fohner combined for a five-inning no-hitter during Louisville’s sectional final win.
Burick started the first two innings and struck out five Mustangs. He opened the game with back-to-back walks and got his first out when catcher Jake Beard threw down to first baseman Grayson Brunoni as both runners attempted to advance. Brunoni then threw across the diamond to third baseman Max Roberts who tagged Deshaun Sarwee for the first out.
Burick settled in after that, striking out the next two batters to close the opening frame and striking out the side in the second inning to complete his day.
Crilow started the third inning with a strikeout and then got the next two batters to ground out to complete a 1-2-3 inning. Crilow also got the first batter to ground out in the fourth inning before issuing a pair of walks. Antonio Cunningham stole third base and scored on a wild pitch for Maple Heights’ lone run.
After that sequence, Crilow gave way to Fohner, who struck out the next batter and ended the frame with a fielder’s choice to halt any further damage. Fohner worked through traffic in the fifth inning, recording a strikeout, issuing a walk, recording another strikeout, and then surrendering another walk. Finally, the game came to a close when a screaming line drive traveled straight into the glove of 6’8 first baseman Aden Norris to complete the no-hitter.
The three Louisville pitchers combined for nine strikeouts, and their only baserunners reached via seven walks.
First Louisville Tournament No-Hitter Since 1995
This is the first recorded combined no-hitter in team history. The 15 previous no-hitters recorded from 1950-2019 were all single pitchers who threw complete games.
It is also the first recorded tournament no-hitter for Louisville baseball in 31 years. Jason Snyder threw a no-hitter in a 17-0 home win over Coventry in a DII Sectional Final on May 4, 1995 for the program’s only other recorded tournament no-hitter.
Leopards Pounce on Mustangs Early
The Leopards wasted no time in jumping on the Mustangs for four runs in the opening inning. Beard laced a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Caden Kortis and Brunoni. Brock Leghart followed with a pop single, plating Beard. Then Roberts drove in Leghart to put Louisville ahead 4-0.
Louisville Scores 10 Runs on 1 Hit in Second Inning
The Leopards exploded for ten runs on just one hit in the second inning to take a commanding 14-0 lead. That lone hit was a two-run single by Roberts that brought home Brunoni and Cody Zahler.
Luke Seaman opened the inning by reaching base on a dropped third strike. He then stole second, stole third, and came home via an RBI groundout by Zander Triplett.
Every other run in the inning came with two outs. Louisville batters reached base on three hit-by-pitches, two walks, and four Maple Heights errors.
Leopards Tie Team Record With 24 Runs
With most of the starters out of the game, the Leopards scored five runs in each of the next two innings to tie the team record for runs scored in a game.
Zahler led off the third inning with a double and then came home via Chase Wilson’s RBI triple. Connor Cassidy then singled home Wilson to make it 17-0. Noah Morris hit a two-out double two batters later before Norris cracked a two-run single scoring Cassidy and Morris to make it 19-0 after three.
In the fourth inning, Caleb Mayle singled home Zahler for the 20th run of the contest. Louisville then plated four more two-out runs. Cassidy hit a sacrifice fly to score Fohner. Then Triplett and Morris hit back-to-back doubles, scoring Mayle and Triplett, respectively. Ten different Leopards recorded hits in the contest, with Morris being the only one to record multiple hits in going 2-for-2. Morris scored Louisville’s final run on a wild pitch to match the record mark of 24 runs.
The only other time the Leopards scored 24 runs also came in a sectional final contest. Louisville mauled Minerva 24-5 in five innings in a DII tournament game back on May 9, 2002.
This is the second time the Leopards have broken the 20-run mark this season. They also won at Perry 20-6 on May 4.
Louisville Wins 4th Sectional Title in 5 Years
Louisville has now won four sectional finals in the past five seasons across three different divisions of competition. They won their 17th Division II sectional title in 2022, their only Division I sectional titles in 2023 and 2024, and have now claimed their first Division III sectional title in 2026. Counting four sectional crowns from 1976-1990, the Leopards Baseball Program has now amassed 24 sectional championships overall.
Louisville has now won seven consecutive home tournament games dating back to 2021. The Leopards are now 24-10 at home in the postseason dating back to their first recorded home playoff game in 1983 against Canton Timken.
Louisville is now 9-5 in tournament play this decade and 56-53 in the postseason dating back to 1972.
