Senior quarterback Gabe Stoffer accounted for 307 yards of offense and 3 total touchdowns to lead the Leopards. Stoffer was 20 of 30 passing for 252 yards hit Owen DiMarzio for 10-yard touchdown pass on a 3rd-and-goal to get Louisville to within 20-14 in the third quarter. The touchdown capped off a 14 play, 80 yard drive that ate up the first 7:21 of the second half.
Stoffer also ran the ball 20 times for 55 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. He scored from 5 yards out for the Leopards first touchdown to cap off a 15 play, 76 yard first half drive that encompassed 7:25 of game time. Stoffer later scored on a “tush push” from less than a yard out to cap off a mammoth 17 play, 80 yard drive that ate up 7:20 of clock.
DiMarzio also matched Stoffer with 55 yards rushing to go along with 5 catches for 29 yards.
Quin Burick led Louisville in receiving with 7 catches for 134 yards. Anderson Kandel also made 2 receptions for 48 yards, Colten Norris had 2 catches for 21 yards, and Luke Seaman made 4 grabs for 20 yards.
Louisville Can’t Capitalize on Opening and Closing Drives
The final numbers were nearly even across the board, but a fumble on the game’s opening drive coupled with a turnover on downs on the Leopards’ final drive proved to be the difference in the contest.
Canfield took a 7-0 lead on their opening drive and Louisville looked to answer back on their first snap. Stoffer went deep to Burick who made the catch ahead of Cardinals defensive back Bryce Roberts. However, Roberts eventually caught him in the red zone. In an effort to make a desperate tackle from behind, Roberts ended up jarring the ball free and fellow defensive back Joey Pannunzio fell on it at the Cardinal 8-yard line.
Canfield would march 92 yards for a touchdown to take a commanding 13-0 lead off the game’s lone turnover.
Later in the fourth quarter, the Leopard defense came up with their first stop of the night and Louisville took over on their own 20 after the punt. Stoffer hit Kandel for a 25 yard first down reception and then Burick for a 14-yard reception to move the sticks again. Stoffer drew a Cardinal defender offside to convert a 4th-and-4, but a loss of 3 yards on the next play set the Leopards back. On 4th-and-13, Stoffer’s pass to Norris went through his outstretched hands, off his helmet, and fell incomplete to clinch the Canfield victory.
Cocca and Pannunzio Lead Cardinal Offense
Quarterback Enzo Cocca accounted for 283 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns to lead the Cardinals. Cocca ran the ball 12 times for 41 yards and plunged in for the game’s opening touchdown from 2 yards out. Cocca was also 14 of 18 passing for 242 yards and completed a backbreaking 43-yard touchdown pass to Pannunzio with 29 seconds left in the first half to put Canfield ahead 20-7.
Pannunzio finished with 3 catches for 58 yards an also led Canfield in rushing with 6 carries for 58 yards. He broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that gave the Cardinals a 13-0 advantage to cap off a 6 play, 92-yard drive.
Bryce Roberts was Cocca’s top target with 4 catches for 77 yards. Matthew Campbell also had 2 catches for 44 yards, A.J. Economous made 3 receptions fro 39 yards, and Landon Shina made 2 grabs for 24 yards.
Streaky Louisville Vs. Canfield All-Time Series
The Leopards have now dropped their last five meetings against the Cardinals after winning the previous five before that. Louisville is now 5-7 against Canfield all-time, which includes a 2-4 record in games played at home in the series.
The Cardinals claimed the first two games in the postseason in 2000 and 2005, but the series has been even since the two teams began scheduling regular season matchups in 2011. The series has been so even overall that the teams were tied in points 205-205 coming into the contest.
