The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team blanked the visiting Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish 4-0 Thursday Evening at Andy Aljancic Field. With the victory, Louisville improves to an even 10-10 on the season.
Morley Efficient in Shutout
Sophomore starting pitcher Connor Morley pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout to lead the Leopards. He retired the first six Fighting Irish batters before first baseman Drew Kirila singled to left to lead off the Ursuline third inning.
Morley responded by sending down the next 10 batters in a row before left fielder Jack Ericson recorded the only other UHS hit in the sixth inning. Morley would face the minimum the rest of the way in facing five Fighting Irish batters and recording five outs.
Morley was extremely efficient in needing just 62 pitches to earn the complete game shutout. He averaged just 2.7 pitches per at-bat and was able to retire batters with only one pitch on 6 occasions. Every out was recorded in play as Morley did not record a single strikeout or issue a single walk.
Morley continues to lead the team in victories as he improves to 5-2 on the season with the win.
Leopards Pounce Early
Morley also helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate. He drove home senior courtesy runner Evan Kroah on a single to the second baseman in the bottom of the first to put Louisville in front 3-0.
The Leopards were poised to pounce on the Fighting Irish from the get go. Junior shortstop JT Popick singled to lead-off the Louisville first, but a double play in the next at-bat dimmed their hopes of striking first.
However, senior second baseman Broc Pickens followed with a 5-pitch walk and senior first baseman Ryan Aljancic doubled on the next pitch to put runners on second and third. Two pitches later, senior catcher Kaedin Gotshall brought both runners home on a 2-run double to left field to break the ice and give the Leopards the early 2-0 advantage.
Gotshall would also finish 2-for-3 at the plate for Louisville who out-hit Urusline 8-2 for the game. The Leopards recorded 5 hits off of Fighting Irish starting pitcher Jonah Kirchner in the opening inning, but managed only a single hit off Kirchner over the next four innings of play.
Adelman Squeezes Home Kroah in 6th
The Leopards figured out Kirchner again in the sixth inning as Gotshall and Morley began the frame with back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Connor Adelman laid down a squeeze bunt allowing Kroah (courtesy runner for Gotshall) to score from third to put LHS in front 4-0.
This is the first known meeting between Louisville and rsuline since 1993. The Fighting Irish prevailed in that game played at Youngstown by the count of 9-8.
