West Branch Snaps 23 Game Spell Against Louisville Softball

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team fell to the host West Branch Warriors 2-1 in 8 innings Thursday Evening at WBHS. With the loss, Louisville drops to 1-1 on the season and 1-1 in NBC play.
West Branch’s Kelsey Byers doubled in Maddie Pidgeon for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pidgeon walked to start the inning and Delaney Rito reached on error to put Pidgeon into scoring position.
An inning before, Louisville knotted the game up at 1-1. Savannah Miner doubled to start the inning, but two quick Leopards outs followed. Next, Leandra Givens reached base on error scoring Miner from second.
The Warriors struck first in the opening inning when Kylie Coffelt singled in Rito from second. West Branch would out-hit Louisville 7-5 for the game.
The Leopards had other scoring opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings. A debated caught stealing call ended the top of the fourth for Louisville. Miner and Lexi Zavarelle were the next two Lady Leopards batters who each singled to start the fifth. After two outs and a walk, Louisville would leave the bases loaded.
Coffelt started the game for West Branch pitching the first five inning scoreless, giving up 4 hits, and striking out 7. Byers pitched the final three innings for the Warriors, gave up no earned runs on 1 hit, and struck out 4 to earn the victory.
In the circle for the Leopards, Morgan Harris pitched a complete game, gave up only 2 runs on 7 hits, and struck out 3. Emily Cantley also finished with a pair of hits for Louisville.
This is West Branch’s first win against Louisville since they edged out a 6-5 victory back on April 16, 2004 at WBHS. The Leopards won the previous 23 games in between and still lead the all-time series 43-16. The loss also snaps Louisville’s 11-game winning streak at West Branch and their 42-game road winning streak in the NBC.
