Louisville 21, Canfield 17

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Football team rallied from a double digit fourth quarter deficit to down the host Canfield Cardinals 21-17 in the season opener at Bob Dove Field Friday Night.

Left for dead, the Leopards faced a 4th-and-10 from their own 45 with 2:34 left to play. Quarterback Brody Hahn dropped back and then rolled to his left away from the charging defenders. Hahn launched a pass just before crossing the line of scrimmage and it was reeled in by a sprinting Tyler Adams inside the Cardinal 30 yard line. Adams spilt two defenders and ran on into the endzone for the go ahead 55 yard touchdown with 2:22 remaining.

Tailback Paul Breinz hit Wide Receiver Paul French down the right sideline for a 43 yard completion down to the Leopards 23 with 1:14 left on the clock. Canfield would net 5 yards on the next 3 plays before facing a 4th-and-5 from the 18. Quarterback Jake Cummings floated a pass into the back of the endzone, but Adams broke up the pass to seal the deal for Louisville with 27 ticks remaining.

Adams would finish with a monster night catching 10 passes for 152 yards and 2 touchdowns. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Adams made an over the shoulder grab in the endzone on a 41 yard bomb from Hahn. The touchdown catch pulled the Leopards to within 17-14 with 7:20 left in the contest.

Hahn was 22 of 40 for 274 yards passing and also finished as the Leopards leading rusher with 18 carries for 52 yards. Hahn also scored from a yard away in the second quarter on a rare play call that had him snap under center.

After Hahn’s score, Hannah Baughman booted through the extra point to become the first ever female Leopards player to score in a Varsity Football game. That kick would knot the game at 7-7 and Baughman would finish a perfect 3 for 3 on extra points for the evening.

The remainder of the second quarter was all Cardinals. Cummings would roll to the left side from 2 yards out to cap a 6 play, 59 yard drive. The Senior Quarterback would account for 79 of Canfield’s 84 rushing yards on 20 carries. He also completed 10 of 18 passes for 133 yards.

Cummings also put Canfield on the board first in the opening quarter. He scored on a back-breaking Quarterback Draw on a 4th-and-12 from 31 yards away.

That score was setup by a 24 yard interception return by Strong Safety Will Dawson. Defensive Back Nick Ieraci also flipped field position with a pick late in the second quarter. His 23 yard interception return setup shop for Canfield at the Leopards 39. The 6 play drive ended with Kicker Ian Kristan hitting home a 29 yard field goal as the first half expired to put the Cardinals ahead by two scores at the break 17-7.

Louisville dominated the stat sheet in terms of first downs 18-6 and total yardage 347-260. The Cardinals two turnovers would have been the equalizer, but Canfield was set back by 11 penalties for 74 yards against the Leopards 3 for 15 yards.

Louisville got contributions from all-around on offense. Max Hartline made 3 catches for 39 yards, Gavin Birone recorded 3 receptions for 32 yards, Logan Thomas tallied 3 catches for 23 yards, and Sean McKinney netted 32 yards on his only reception. Leopards Runningback Gavin VanZant also carried the ball 11 times for 21 yards.
