North Canton 12, Louisville 1, 5 innings

Erika Warren went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and 5 RBI’s  and Caly Russo pitched a two-hitter to lead the defending State Champion Hoover Vikings over the Lady Leopards 12-1 in five innings Monday evening at Price Park.

The Lady Vikings dominated the game from start to finish.  They took an early 2-0 lead off Warren’s RBI single and Kelly Dillow’s sacrifice fly.  Both MacKenzie DiPietro and Jenna Lilley scored on the plays respectively.

On a night when everything went North Canton’s way, it was only fitting that the Leopards only run came off the bat of Amy Hoover.  Previously, Annie Woolf was hit by a pitch to start the inning.  Shelby Swigert’s sac bunt advanced her to second, and a wild pitch left her sixty feet from home.  Then Hoover, the player not the team, rocketed a drive down the left field line that went in and out of the left-fielder Ally Farrah’s glove.  Woolf scored on the play and Hoover advanced all the way to third after an overthrow.

The Vikings answered back with a six-run inning.  Sarah Wechter set the tone for the inning by leading Beatty's Sports Spring Sports Logos Softball off with a triple and then scoring on a wild pitch.  Later, Farrah’s single brought home Russo, and DiPietro came home after an overthrow was ruled out of play to make it 5-1 Vikings.

After Jenna Lilley walked, Warren launched a pitch perfectly down the left field line keeping it just fair enough for a three-run homer.  Farrah and Lilley crossed home followed by Warren who celebrated with her teammates as Hoover capped off a six-run second inning.

The Leopards failed to get anything going offensively after that, but the Vikings continued their production in the bottom of the third.  DiPietro’s single to shallow right brought home Russo to make it 9-1.

Gianna Falcone then came in to pitch for the Leopards and struck out back-to-back Vikings.  However, how to get Warren out still remained a mystery as she busted a single to right-center.  The ball took a nasty hop in the outfield grass and allowed Riley Kiesling and DiPietro to score.  Jordan Stump came in to pinch-run for Warren and she then scored after another error.  12-1 Vikings.

Russo did the rest for the Viks as she pitched all five innings, struck out three, and gave up no earned runs.  For the Leopards, Falcone retired the Vikings in order on three straight ground-outs in the fourth, but it would end up being the only easy inning defensively for Louisville.

The highly anticipated NBC Vs. Federal League match-up is now completed.  The defending State Champions look ever poised for another deep run.  But for the Lady Leopards, hopes for an NBC Crown and a deep tournament run are still alive and well.  For the calendar reads April, not May.
