Shearer Perfection! Shearer Throws Perfect Game Against Salem – Baseball
Louisville 2, Salem 0
Jordan Shearer threw a 7-inning perfect game as the Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Baseball Team shutout the visiting Salem Quakers 2-0 Wednesday Evening at the Field of Dreams. With the victory, Louisville now holds a 9-3 record overall and continues their unbeaten ways through the NBC at 6-0.
Shearer needed just 84 pitches to retire all 21 batters he faced. He set the tone early by striking out the first two Salem batters in the top of the 1st. Shear followed that effort up by striking out the side in the second inning which was part of fanning 5 consecutive Quakers in a row. He would go on to strikeout 12 for the contest.
The Leopards offense seemingly needed all of Shearer’s performance on the mounds as the game remained scoreless after 4 1/2 innings. Louisville finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases. Cam King grounded to the third baseman and everyone remained safe as Cam Lingle scored the go-ahead run from third. Next, Davis Burick singled home Dillon Rebuck to give LHS a 2-0 cushion.
The lead only seemed to drive Shearer to throw harder as he struck out the side in the sixth leaving him just three outs away from the unmentionable. Shearer need just four pitches to get those 3 outs as Salem swung at every pitch they were offered in the seventh. All three at-bats ended in infield groundouts. The first out was swept up by Dom Mongiardo at second base and the second out was fielded by Caleb Prasco taking it himself at first base.
Unlike most epic tales, there was no dramatic build up to the final out. The very next pitch was a solid hit ground ball to Burick at Shortstop. He back handed it in his glove and stepped into a throw to first. Prasco dug it out on the other end for out number twenty-one. Shearer fist pumped in celebration and was congratulated by a huddle of teammates in front of the mound where he completed a perfect day’s work.
This is just the second perfect game and only known 7-inning perfect game in recorded Louisville Leopards Baseball History. Kyle Smith threw a 5-inning perfect game in the Leopards 10-0 victory on the road against the Akron Springfield Spartans on May 12, 2005. The NBC season finale victory ensured the Leopards a back-to-back outright NBC title that day and this year’s team will look to follow suit in their pursuit of the final NBC crown.
Smith went on to play at Kent State and was later drafted in the 20th round of the 2009 draft by the Cleveland Indians. Shearer’s performance leaves him in rare company in game that will never be forgotten.
