Rosebud Reservation Children Learn What Louisville is Known For
“Down! Set! Hut! Hut!” the children of the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota chanted
during a program called Rosebud Metrokids last week. Pastors Johnny & Heidi Wade of All Nations Church in Mission, South Dakota had previously asked the Ohio Missions team from Louisville First Assembly of God, “What is Louisville known for?” One recent graduate of Louisville High School quickly responded by saying “FOOTBALL!”
And there it was…nearly 1,200 miles away, in the second poorest county in the United States, and with wildfires raging just miles away from them, the kids of the Rosebud Reservation stated their memory verse and ended it with “DOWN! SET! HUT! HUT!” to symbolize the tradition of Leopards football.
The program is a weekly Sidewalk Sunday School type event for kids that includes games, candy, singing a song, sports, and a lesson. The kids bubble with joy each week that this program is put on, as it provides an escape from the harsh reality of their living conditions.
While this part of my trip from July 21-28 was a bit of fun, the area we ministered too was very dark. Alcoholism filled the streets, the practice of witchcraft was attempted on the church we stayed at, and poverty is rampant in the second poorest county in the United States.
While I will not attempt on this website to change your views in anyway, I will say that my life is forever changed. Do not take what you have in this great city of Louisville, Ohio or wherever you may live for granted, because it is truly luxuriousness compared to Todd County, South Dakota. Please keep your thoughts and/or prayers on the Lakota people.
