The Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball Team pulled out a thrilling 64-62 victory over the Richmond Heights Spartans in a back-and-forth battle Friday night at Louisville High School. The Leopards withstood a late comeback by the Spartans and delivered in the clutch to extend their winning streak to seven games, improving to 12-4 overall.

Gross Leads the Way with 22 Points for Louisville
Brayden Gross scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead the Leopards. He also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded a steal.
Gross was a force in the paint, scoring on multiple putbacks and knocking down clutch free throws down the stretch. He hit 10-of-14 free throws, including six in the fourth quarter alone.
Aljancic Hits Go-Ahead Three with 23 Seconds Left
DeErick Barber split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 60-60 with 1:05 remaining. On the other end of the court, Louisville worked the ball around with some crisp passes, eating up another half-minute of game time.
The Leopards reset the offense as point guard Beau Siegfried dribbled back toward midcourt. Siegfried then fired a pass to Tate Aljancic who popped open on the right wing. he defender held his arms out but didn’t contest, as Aljancic buried his second three-pointer of the night from several feet beyond the arc, putting Louisville ahead 63-60 with 35 seconds remaining.
Aljancic finished with 12 points, matched Gross with a team-best 8 rebounds, registered 6 assists, and recorded 2 steals.
Marshall Defends, Secures Loose Ball with 2.2 Left
Barber answered back immediately with a drive to the bucket on the other end to get Richmond Heights within 63-62 with 23.2 seconds remaining.
After a timeout, the Leopards worked the ball up court before Gross was fouled with 13.4 seconds remaining. He hit the back end of two bonus free throw attempts to increase Louisville’s lead to 64-62.
Barber sped down the court and kicked to Ohio State recruit Dorian Jones several feet beyond the top of the arc. Ashton Marshall got a hand up in defense and the deep three-ball hit the back iron. The ball ricocheted onto the floor, and a mad scramble ensued to the left of the key. Marshall hustled from the top of the arc, secured the ball, and alertly called timeout with 2.2 seconds left.
The Spartans fouled with 1.2 seconds left giving the Leopards a chance to secure the game at the line. However, the first shot attempt missed and their was a lane violation on the second attempt giving Richmond Heights an inbound with no timeouts. The final shot attempt from three-fourths of the court hit the right side of the backboard as the final buzzer sounded, 64-62 Louisville.
Marshall finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds. Devin Bailey also tallied 7 points and grabbed 5 boards.
Siegfried’s Hot Start Gives Louisville Early Advantage
Siegfried cashed in on 3 three-pointers in the opening quarter and finished in double figures with 11 points. He would also finish with 4 assists and 2 rebounds.
Siegfried drilled his third three-pointer from five feet beyond the arc to give Louisville its largest lead of the contest at 17-6 with 2:37 left in the first quarter.
The Spartans would score the final seven points of the opening quarter to get to within 19-15. Richmond Heights later scored the final five points of the second quarter to snatch a 30-29 halftime lead.
Marshall hit a three-ball to open the scoring in the second half and the Leopards would later string together a 10-0 run to take a 45-36 lead.
Barber Scores Team-High 18 to Lead Spartans
Barber scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to lead Richmond Heights. Barber led the Spartans on an 11-4 run to knot the game at 54-54 midway through the final quarter. Jones also made 2 of his 3 three-pointers during the fourth quarter before finishing with 13.
The lead changed hands five times over two minutes before the teams found themselves tied again at 60-all. In the end, the Spartans would see their 4-game winning streak snapped as they fell to an even 8-8 on the year.
Joey Emory and Demmaris Winters both hit a pair of three-pointers and finished in double figures for Richmond Heights.. Emory scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half, while Winters registered 9 of his 12 points before halftime. Mehki Ansberry rounded out the Spartan scoring with a second quarter basket.
This was the first meeting between Louisville and Richmond Heights in boys basketball. The Spartans are the 84th unique opponent the Leopards have faced in the Siegfried Era.
UP NEXT:The Leopards will next host the Alliance Aviators on Saturday, February 1. JV will begin at 5:30 PM with Varsity following around 7:00 PM.
