Louisville 27, Poland 13

Storms rolled into Louisville Friday Evening delaying the season opener until Saturday. The Leopards didn’t let mother nature ruin the start of their season and rolled past the visiting Poland Seminary Bulldogs 27-13 back on August, 28, 2004.

Louisville’s defense held Poland to only 105 yards of offense and 5 first downs. The Bulldogs only scores consisted of two Fred Romeo field goals and Luke Blangero’s 12 yard interception return touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Leopard offense racked up 386 yards. Quarterback Mark Gulling finished 8 of 19 passing for 175 yards through the air and 2 touchdowns. The key play of the game came when Louisville was trailing 10-7. Gulling found wide receiver Drew Kuhn open down the left sideline and Kuhn sprinted by the defense for a 56 yard score to give the Leopards the lead just before half.

The Bulldogs narrowed their deficit to 14-13 via Romeo’s 35 yard field goal with 1:42 left in the third quarter. However, the Leopards answered back to put the game away in the fourth. Deep in Poland territory, Kuhn ran for a first down via  a fake punt to spark the back breaking drive. He was also the recipient of the 30 yard touchdown pass from Gulling that put Louisville ahead 20-13.

The Leopard defense continued to shutdown the Bulldogs. Gulling would deliver the final blow on offense a little later via an 8 yard touchdown run to give Louisville a 27-13 advantage.

Louisville carried the ball 40 times in the game for 211 yards overall. Aaron Scott was the leading rusher for the Leopards with 73 yards on 17 carries. Brian Whaley also ran for a 14 yard touchdown on the ground in the opening quarter.

Poland Quarterback Dom Marchionda finished just 4 of 12 for 49 yards and Jim Shurilla was the Bulldogs leading rusher with 19 carries for 47 yards.
