Perry Panthers at Louisville Leopards 1970 Football Highlights
Perry 15, Louisville 13
The Perry Panthers spoiled the Louisville Leopards chance to claim the Federal League Title outright by defeating them 15-13 in front of a crowd of 6,500 at Louisville Stadium on November 6, 1970.
After a scoreless first quarter, Louisville got on the board first via a Ken Kuhn 2 yard touchdown run. After a failed extra point attempt, the Leopards led 6-0.
Perry would answer the Louisville drive with a 17 play, 68 yard touchdown drive of their own. On a 4th-and-Long runningback Scott Llyod received hand-off to the right and then hit Jim Miller for a 32 yard touchdown with just 0:49 remaining in the opening half. Jeff Musser’s extra point kick split the uprights to put the Panthers ahead 7-6 at the break.
Perry put together another long scoring drive in the third quarter after Rick Kirkpatrick recovered a Louisville fumble on the Panther 27. The 16 play drive ended with Tailback Earl Harbin scoring from 18 yards out. Harbin finished with 111 yards on 29 carries.
Perry went for the kill when they elected to go for the two-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point. It paid off as Quarterback Steve Meredith found Don Dobina for the conversion to give the Panthers a 15-6 lead.
The Leopards shrunk the lead to 15-13 after a 58 yard touchdown drive. Ron Pierce recovered a Panther fumble to begin the possession and several screen passes got Louisville down the gridiron. Halfback Bruce Lynch, who was instrumental on the drive, caught 7 passes for 92 yards for the Leopards in the game. Kuhn plowed through from 2 yards out, kicked the PAT, and would finish with 21 carries for 82 yards.
The Leopards had one final chance to win the game when they got the ball back with just 91 seconds remaining. However, Mark Wood provided the game-winning interception for the Panthers 15 seconds later.
