Louisville – 224.5 (2nd Out of 47)

The Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the Maumee Bay Classic at Oregon Clay High School on Friday and Saturday. Louisville finished with 224.5 team points which earned them second place out of 47 competing schools.

Nine Leopards placed at the tournament which included three champions. Garett Lautzenheiser (120), Davin Rhoads (132), and Jax Leonard (170) all captured 1st place to lead the Leopards. Dominic Hoffarth (106) also finished 3rd. Blake Robbins (220) and Cameron Brazek (285) each took 5th in their heavyweight brackets. Brent Paulus (195) captured 6th. Dan Adams (113) and Dan Kennedy (152) rounded out the Louisville placers in taking 7th.

Garett Lautzenheiser Pins Bryce Allison for 120 Title

Lautzenheiser won 3 of his 5 matches by fall including a pin in 5:22 against Elyria’s Bryce Allison in the 120 championship match. Rhoads also earned 3 victories by fall to begin his championship run. In the championship bout, Rhoads edged out Brighton’s Sam Freeman 3-2 to take the 132 title.

Leonard was completely dominate as he pinned all 5 of his opponents en rout to the 170 championship. Leonard needed just 24 seconds to pin his opening round opponent and followed with two more first period falls. In the first place match, Leonard pinned Warren Woods Tower’s Omari Embree in 3:57. Embree is Michigan’s Division II defending 160 state champion.

Hoffarth overcame an early quarterfinal loss with 4 straight victories in the consolation bracket to earn third in 106. Hoffarth won by 7-5 decision over Troy Christian’s Caleb Schroer in the third place match.

Brazek battled back from a second round loss before defeating Massillon’s Rager Els 3-1 in the heavyweight 5th place match. Reversely, Robbins won his first 3 matchups in the 220 bracket before falling in the championship semifinals by 6-4 decision. Robbins would claim 5th place after winning by forfeit against Medina’s Blake Chrisman who sustained an injury in the consolation semifinals.

Paulus was defeated in the championships quarterfinals in sudden victory, but won his next three matches in the consolation bracket to punch a spot in the 5th place match. Host Clay’s Ty Cobb would defeat Paulus in a tie-breaker as Paulus took 6th place in 195.

Adams and Kennedy also both sustained early defeats and rallied back to take 7th place in their respective weight classes. Adams earned an 8-6 decision over Mayfield’s Dominic Gerome in the 113 7th place match. Kennedy won by 12-4 major decision against Lake’s Matt Beard to take 7th in 152.

The nationally ranked Brighton Bulldogs out of Michigan won the tournament with a team score of 229.5. The Leopards came in second as the top Ohio team just five points behind Brighton. Louisville finished 15 points ahead of the nationally ranked Elyria Pioneers who claimed third place with 209.5 team points.
