Nolte Walk-Off Completes Louisville Shutout of Massillon – Softball
Louisville 10, Massillon 0, 5 Innings
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Softball Team blanked the visiting Massillon Tigers in a run-rule 10-0 five inning victory Monday at the Diamond of Dreams. With the victory, Louisville improves to 1-1 on the season.
Kaylee Nolte hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to clinch the Lady Leopards first victory of the season. Pitcher Sarah Cantley helped her own cause by batting a perfect 2-for-2 and also hit a 2-run home run in the third inning. In the circle, she recorded a complete game 5-inning shutout, surrendered just 2 hits, and struck out 10 in the process.
Louisville took command of the contest with 3 runs in the bottom of the second. Nolte was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI single by Justina Sirohman. Cantley singled in-between those two at-bats and her courtesy runner Katie Porter came home via a wild pitch. Finally, Sirohman took home after Massillon elected to throw down and tag out Lauren Bennett attempting to steal second.
The Leopards continued to tack onto their lead in the third inning. Teagan Rice set the tone by leading off with a double. Her and Kaycee Ollis both ended up scoring on errors to put Louisville in front 5-0. Alex Fankhauser walked after that and came home via Cantley’s bomb to right field to cap off a four run third.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Leopards put the game away in the fifth. Ollis walked on 5 pitches to start the frame. She then stole second and third. Fankhauser reached on an error bringing in Ollis to make the lead 8-0. Fankhauser was then replaced by courtesy runner Ashley Zifer. It didn’t matter though as Nolte launched a line drive over the center field fence on the next pitch to end the game. The walk-off was the first home run of her varsity career.
With the victory, Louisville has now won their last 4 meetings with Massillon. The Lady Leopards are now doubling up the Tigers for wins in the series with an 18-9 mark against them overall. This is the seventh time Louisville has shutout Massillon with Cantley throwing a no-hitter against them in their previous meeting in 2017.
UP NEXT: The Louisville Leopards Softball Team will next host the GlenOak Golden Eagles on Tuesday, April 2 at 5:00 PM.
