Lucas Poyser Advances to State After Dominate Performance

Louisville Junior Lucas Poyser qualified for the state wrestling meet after a dominate performance in the semi-finals at Alliance High School Saturday.  Poyser crushed Walsh Jesuit’s Dominic Scarberry for a technical decision in winning 16-2.

Poyser rushed out of the gate taking Scarberry down for 3 easy points just 38 seconds into the match, before leading 8-0 upon the end of the first period.  ““They’re not used to people coming out at them. When I caught him in that throw, it took the energy right out him,”  said the 152-pound Poyser who eventually cruised to the 16-2 victory.

Lucas was inspired by his brother Joe, who had finished third in the state at 215 last year.  “I promised my family, my girlfriend that I’d make it,” Poyser said after his epic win.

“When he got those back points it broke (Scarberry’s) spirit. He smelled blood and went after it,” said an impressed Leopard head coach Jeff Berkebile.  “He definitely showed me he came to wrestle.”

Poyser will compete in the state tournament meet at Auxiliary Gymnasium in Columbus beginning Thursday.
