Louisville Uses Ground Attack to Cruise Past Minerva 44-21

The Louisville Leopards ran for 319 of their 431 total offensive yards on the ground during a 44-21 victory over the visiting Minerva Lions Friday Evening at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the victory, Louisville is now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in NBC play.

Runningback Walter Schrock ran the ball 16 times for 171 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 34 Beatty's Sports Long Sleeved Leopard Nationand 69 to lead the Leopards. Quarterback Connor Zwick also ran for 94 yards and scored 2 touchdowns on the ground while also completing 9 of 16 passes for 112 yards through the air.

Louisville took a 14-0 advantage after the opening quarter, but Minerva struck back to cut the deficit to 17-14. Lions Quarterback Storm Angione first completed a 18 yard touchdown strike to Adam Gross and then a 31 yard touchdown pass Dalton Hartshorn. Angione finished the evening 13 of 19 for 142 yards.

The Leopards answered with a 9 play, 56 yard drive that ended with Zwick running up the gut for a 4 yard touchdown with just 11 seconds remaining in the half. Louisville took a 24-14 lead into the break.

As they have all season, the Leopards came out strong in the third quarter to put the game away. Louisville took their opening second half possession and drove 61 yards on 9 plays to take a 31-14 lead. The scoring play consisted of Zwick hitting Kyle Woost for a 29 yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-10. Woost finished as the game’s top receiver with 4 catches for 55 yards. Then, after a defensive stop, Schrock broke free and sprinted 69 yards to give the Leopards comfortable 37-14 lead. Louisville has now outscored their opponents 62-0 in the third quarter this season.

Woost also scored on a 1 yard touchdown run with 9:52 remaining to instate the 30-point mercy rule. However, it did not last long as Hartshorn ran for 70 yards on the first play of the Lions next series and then 4 yards to the endzone on the second play. Hartshorn finished with 107 yards on 15 carries for Minerva.

With the win, the Leopards now lead the all-time series over the Lions 62-20-5 which includes a 30-11-2 edge at Louisville. The Leopards have now won 13 out of their last 14 meetings with the Lions including the last 7 at home.
