The Leopards defense was tough as nails to start the season as they forced Canfield into two straight 3-and-outs.  After a punt, the Leopard offense began at their own 35 yard line.  On the first play of the drive, Trevor Hostetler caught a short pass from Duckworth and took it across midfield.  However, a personal foul was called against the Leopards after the play was over to back them up 15 yards.

Duckworth then hit Alex Hollifield for a 7 yard gain and used his legs to run for the first down himself.  Three plays later, Duckworth connected with Ohman who juked two defenders for a 32 yard gain to the Canfield 13 yard line.  Immediately after that, the Cardinal defense was left in the dust by runningback Trey Hayford’s touchdown draw up the middle.  After Merrick Storlie’s extra point went through it was 7-0 Leopards with 4:10 left in the first quarter.

Near the end of the quarter, Yoder made the first of his two big defensive plays on the night.  The Junior defensive back reached over the middle and snagged a Cardinal pass to setup the Leopards offense on their own 30 yard line.

After a three-and-out and a failed fake punt attempt, the Leopards surrendered the ball to the Cardinals at the Louisville 22 yard line.  Canfield did not take advantage of the Leopards gift though.  On the first play of their drive a bad snap netted negative 16 yards.  Then Canfield got the necessary yardage on a 4th-and-16 play before a holding call brought the play back.  An overthrow on the second fourth down attempt gave the ball back to Louisville.

Two drives later, the Leopards showed the high school football world how scary their offense
can be when it clicks.  After being pinned deep, Louisville put together a 10 play 92 yard drive that ate up 4:05 off the clock.  The jump start to the drive came when Duckworth connected with Jeremy McQuilkin for a first down on a 3rd-and-8.  On the next play, Duckworth hit Ohman on the right side of the line of scrimmage.  Ohman found a hole and made Canfield pay with a 47 yard gain to the Cardinal 37 yard line.

A sack by the Cardinals set the Leopards back, but Duckworth again connected with McQuilkin down the left sideline for a key first down on a 3rd-and-17.  Three plays later Ohman caught a 17 yard touchdown pass from Duckworth in the back left corner of the endzone to put the Leopards up 13-0.  Louisville finished 5 of 10 for third downs on the evening, three of which came during this textbook scoring drive.  Another picture perfect extra point by Storlie made it 14-0 Leopards and they would go into the half with that lead 1:17 later.

The Leopards offense came out of the room hungry and again took it to Canfield.  Just four plays into the second half, Duckworth floated a pass to Alex Schooley on the left side of the field near the goal line.  Schooley reached above the defender and pulled down the circus grab for the 31 yard touchdown.  It was a fitting end to drive that Schooley setup two plays earlier when he busted through fives tackles on his way to a 19 yard gain.  He finished the evening with 4 catches for 67 yards.  The Leopards went 63 yards in 4 plays in only 1:45 to make it 21-0.

Both teams had ample chances for scores snuffed out in the next few drives.  The Leopards defense pushed the Canfield offensive line backwards on a 4th-and-1 play from the Lousiville 35 to give the ball back to the Leps on downs.  Leopard defensive lineman Dylan Kline also recorded a sack to halt another Cardinal drive.  The Leopards squandered an opportunity to nail the coffin down by fumbling deep into Canfield territory as well.  Thus, no one scored until midway through the fourth period.

Canfield put together a 15 play 81 yard drive that was keyed by a 4th-and-8 conversion from quarterback Jake Cole to Wide Receiver Jake Dawson.  Runningback Conner Kesner then took a direct snap and ran 29 yards to the Louisville 3 yard line.  Two plays later Kesner scored Canfield’s first touchdown of the new season to make it 21-6 with 5:57 remaining in the contest.

Things looked great for the Leopards following that.  A botched extra point attempt was picked off in the endzone by Louisville linebacker Gary Anile.  Then Louisville marched all the way down to the border of the Cardinal redzone.  The drive was keyed by another 3rd-and-long conversion when Duckworth found a diving Hollifield for a 31 yard gain on 3rd-and-11.

Not long after, disaster struck.  Duckworth’s pass found the hands of safety Nick Annichenni at the five yard line.  He sprinted 54 yards the other way before Duckworth made a touchdown saving tackle at the Louisville 41.  After a 38 yard gain on a pass from quarterback Kimu Kim to Dawson, Kesner scored his second touchdown from three yards away.  Dawson finished as the lead receiver for Canfield with 5 catches for 65 yards and Kesner had 4 carries for 37 yards.  The extra point kept the score a one possession ball game at 21-13 with 2:33 left to play.

The Cardinals followed that up by recovering an onside kick, which gave them the ball at midfield.  But the Leopards defense refused to let LHS lose their third opening game in a row.  Kline batted down a pass on the first play and then helped wrap up Kim in the backfield for Leopard linebacker Charles Beamer to deliver the knockout blow and the sack.

Two straight completions by the Cardinals to wide receiver Kyle Nagy and Annichenni, the tailback, helped Canfield gain 20 yards to force a 4th-and-1 play.  Out of a timeout, the snap sailed high above Kim’s head and took a huge hop off the turf.  The second it landed again, Yoder was there to fall on it.  Game, Set, Match…the Leopards had won their first opener since 2009.
