Louisville Leopards at Hoover Vikings 2018 Football Highlights
North Canton Hoover 30, Louisville 14
The Louisville Leopards Varsity Football Team fell to the host North Canton Hoover Vikings 30-14 at Memorial Stadium Friday Night. With the loss, Louisville drops to 0-2 on the season.
Quarterback Jared Mathie finished with 328 total yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Leopards offense. Mathie was 17 of 28 passing for 238 yards and connected with Davis Burick on a 30 yard touchdown pass. Mathie also ran the ball 20 times for 90 yards and ran in a 5 yard touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Burick was Louisville’s leading receiver with 8 catches for 108 yards. After spotting Hoover a 10-0 advantage, the Leopards got on the board late in the opening quarter. Facing a 4th-and-6, Mathie threw the ball down the left sideline to Burick who hauled in the catch on the back of a Hoover defender across the goal line. The score cut the Vikings advantage to 10-7 with 53 seconds left in the first quarter.
North Canton was led by Runningback Adam Griguolo who finished with 24 carries for 155 yards and 4 touchdowns. Griguolo reached paydirt on runs of 4, 17, 23, and 27. Quarterback Connor Ashby also ran the ball 4 times for 50 yards as Hoover compiled a 214-123 advantage on the ground.
Ashby was also efficient through the air hitting 17 of 20 passes for 219 yards. His top targets included Trent Graham and Davis Forrest who finished with 4 catches each. Graham registered 54 yards receiving and Forrest tallied 36.
Louisville held the advantage in yardage through the air 253-219. Bryce Zuppe also had 4 catches for 52 yards and Ryan Pukys slid by a defender for a 43 yard reception on another drive.
In the end, the Leopards were disadvantaged by penalties and turnovers. On their first drive of the game, a Louisville pass deflected off a North Canton defender, then off an LHS receiver, and finally landed into the hands of Hoover Defensive Back AJ Vega. The pick was the first of his two interceptions on the night. The other came on the Leopards opening drive of the second half in nearly the same spot on the field.
The Vikings third takeaway came late in the contest on a fluke fumble as Louisville went to throw. Hoover Linebacker Andrew Spence caught the ball out of the air to end the Leopards final scoring threat at the North Canton 23. Hoover had no turnovers in comparison.
Louisville also finished with 9 penalties for 75 yards. None was bigger than the penalty that erased a 78 yard interception return touchdown by Dillon Rebuck with 10 seconds to go before halftime. The Leopards were called for a block in the back at the end of the return and also roughing the passer earlier which gave the ball back to North Canton. If the return had stand, Louisville would have trailed 17-13 pending the extra point.
With the loss, the Vikings have now defeated the Leopards in three straight meetings for the first time since 1997-1999. Louisville still leads the all-time series 55-36-5, which includes a 25-21-2 mark in games played at North Canton. Hoover has now won five straight at home in the series as the Leopards have not won at Memorial Stadium since they defeated the Vikings 22-0 back on August 29, 2008.
