Louisville Leopards Shorts with Claw LogoThe Louisville Leopards Junior Varsity Football Team shutout the Lake Blue Streaks 1-0 in scrimmage action Saturday at Lake Blue Streaks Stadium.

On the first play of Lake’s second drive, Louisville Defensive Back Carter Rode stepped in front of pass, intercepted it, and had a clear path to the endzone. Due to the nature of the scrimmage with coaches in the backfield, the whistle blew before he made it to the goal line. Nevertheless, the would be pick six served as the game’s only score.

The Leopards offense moved the ball well on both of their possessions. Quarterback Colton Jones hit Rode for a 15 yard gain then Ryan Pukys for another 18 yard completion on Louisville’s first two plays from scrimmage. Running against the Blue Streaks proved a much harder challenge and the Leopards offense managed just 6 yards over the next 6 plays.

On play 9, Jones rolled to the right and found Kyle Boggs down the right sideline for a gain of 28. The final play of the series went for no gain and Louisville came up just 4 yards short of the goal line.

After a few rough plays to start their second drive, the Leopard offense got rolling again. Jones connected with Hunter Selander for an 8 yard gain, Rode for another 15 yard reception, and Sam Macro for 10 more yards on three straight plays. But yet again, Lake slammed the door shut on the Louisville rushing attack and began to put pressure on the passing attack as well. The Leopards went backwards over the course of the next 6 plays.

On their final play of the series, Jones bulleted a pass to Selander over the middle who managed to plow his way to the Blue Streaks 7. Louisville finished both drive knocking on the door. Jones finished 9 of 14 for 130 yards passing. Selander had 2 catches for 41 yards and Rode finished with 2 catches for 30 yards.

The Blue Streaks offense netted only 11 yards on 10 plays against the Leopards stonewall defense. Quintin Scheetz stormed in for a pair of sacks and Austen Black had another during the drive. This pressure took its tool and Lake committed an unforced fumble on the next play. Louisville Defensive Lineman Mike Godfrey pounced on it at the Blue Streaks 32. With one more play, Lake made up what they had lost with a 9 yard gain to their own 41 to end the possession.

After Rode’s interception on the first play, the Blue Streaks found more success on their second drive. However, the Leopards defense still came up with key plays to keep them at bay. Louisville Defensive Lineman Acemar Mraz recorded a sack and Black, Blake Davis, and Elijah Wilkes stormed into the backfield to blow up a jet sweep at the Leopards 23. The scrimmage ended on the next play when Wilkes broke up a pass in the endzone to preserve the 1-0 Louisville win.
