Grove Appliance Alliance Ohio AdThe Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team fell just short in their season opener against the host Lake Blue Streaks 40-38 Wednesday Night at Lake High School.

Rachel Israel scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Leopards, who nearly rallied back from a double digit second half deficit. Israel also dropped home the only two Louisville three-pointers of the contest. Kayla Gibson and Cassidy Kiko both made 3 buckets from the field to finish with 6 points a piece for the Lady Leopards as well.

Louisville Leopards Light Blue Hoodie Established 1924 - Beatty's Sports Fall 2017The Blue Steaks bolted into the new season in taking a 14-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mackenzie Hance scored half of her team-high 12 points in the opening period to lead Lake to the early advantage. Hance would also hit 3 of the Blue Streaks 5 makes from beyond the arch in the game.

The Leopards inched a point closer in each of the next two quarters to get within 30-21 heading into the final eight minutes. Louisville outscored Lake 17-10 in the final period and shrink the deficit to 39-36 late. However, Jessica LeBeau would hit the second of two free throw attempts with 14.1 seconds remaining to give the Lady Streaks a 40-36 cushion and more importantly a two possession advantage. LeBeau would finish with 8 and teammate Sarah Miller would also finish with 9 to round out Lake’s top scorers.

Gibson took the ensuing inbound pass and dribbled coast to coast to get the Lady Leopards to within 40-38 with under 8 seconds to play. However, the clock mercilessly ran and by the time the Leopards could foul, only 0.8 seconds remained. In the double bonus, the Blue Streaks missed both free throws on the other end. But Louisville was unable to get one final shot off before the final horn.

The loss snaps the Lady Leopards 3 game winning streak against Lake over the past 3 seasons. Lake defeated Louisville 61-41 on December 4, 2013 for their fourth straight victory in the see-saw series at the time. The Lady Leopards now hold a 24-18 record against the Blue Streaks in the all-time head-to-head series, which includes an 11-10 record in games played at Lake.
