The Louisville Leopards Football Team shutout the host East Canton Hornets 30-0 Saturday morning at Foltz Stadium. Louisville found the endzone 5 times and held East Canton scoreless on each of their three series of possessions.
Leopards Score Twice on Opening Series
The Leopards scored a pair of touchdowns on their opening series of plays. Senior quarterback Owen Burick connected with senior wide receiver Braiden Hershey for a 34 yard pass completion on the opening play of competition. Five plays later, senior runningback Will Ramsey took a handoff, ran right, and plowed his way through defenders into the endzone for a 15 yard touchdown run. There were no conversion attempts throughout the scrimmage so Louisville took a 6-0 advantage.
The Leopards offense resumed play at their own 20 yard line after the touchdown. On the first play of the next drive, Burick found sophomore wide receiver Quin Burick down the left side line and he turned up field for a 44 yard reception. Six plays later, Owen Burick went deep down the left sideline to Hershey who hauled in an over the shoulder catch at the goal line for a 30 yard touchdown reception. 12-0 Leopards.
Hershey would break wide open to catch another 30 yard touchdown reception on Louisville’s next sequence. However, the 30 yard strike from junior quarterback Cooper Rice to Hershey would be called back by a penalty and the Leopards drive would end a play later.
On Louisville’s final possession of the scrimmage, Leopard Head Coach Chris Kappas was not happy when Rice took a hit from an East Canton defender near the left sideline. He substituted Rice for junior quarterback Tate Aljancic. On the ensuing play, Aljancic stepped back and launched a pass deep down the left sideline to junior wide receiver Jacob Paumier at the Hornet 33 yard line. Paumier hauled in the catch, side-stepped a defender near the left sideline, and sprinted into the center of the endzone to up the LHS advantage to 24-0.
Dougherty and Stoffer Record Pick Sixes
Earlier, the Louisville defense held East Canton to just 12 yards on their first 8 plays of offense. The Leopards made several stops in the backfield on the drive as well. On the ninth play of the drive, junior linebacker Cam Dougherty leaped and made a finger tipped interception at the 43 yard line and took it to the house for a pick six to make it 18-0 LHS.
Two of the Hornets final three plays of offense resulted in negative yardage before they gave the ball back to the Louisville offense.
East Canton’s most promising drive of the game started with a 49 yard reception on the second play of the series down to the LHS 25 yard line. It would end when sophomore linebacker Braiden Elsass wrapped up the Hornet ball carrier at 2 yard line on what would have been 3rd-and-goal in a real game scenario.
The Leopard defense gave the East Canton offense plenty of trouble again on their third possession. A throw across the middle soon after that was snagged by Louisville sophomore defensive back Gabe Stoffer for an interception. Stoffer followed the blocks of his teammates and weaved his way through would be Hornet tacklers for a 50 yard pick six that extended the Leopard lead to 30-0.
A few more plays were carried out by each team and the scrimmage ended after that.
UP NEXT: The Leopards will next travel to Bob Dove Field take on the host defending DIII State Champion Canfield Cardinals in a scrimmage on Thursday, August 10. Freshman will start at 5:00 PM, JV is scheduled for 6:00 PM, and Varsity will follow around 7:00 PM.
