Louisville 64, Cardinal Mooney 55

The Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball Team earned a 64-55 road win against the host Cardinal Mooney Cardinals in Youngstown Friday Night. With the victory, Louisville has now won 6 of their last 7 games to up their overall record to 7-4 on the year.

Collin Chambers hit home a pair of three-pointers and scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to lead the Leopards. Scotty Gronow and Dakota Hoffman also poured in 15 points each. Colton Jones registered 3 three-pointers to finish with 9 as well.

Six different Leopards scored in the first quarter as they opened up a 22-3 lead when the period ended. The Cardinals doubled up the Leopards 18-9 in the second quarter, but LHS still maintained a double digit 31-21 advantage at the break.

Cardinal Mooney continued to cut into the Louisville lead in the second half. The Cardinals got to within 43-39 by the end of the third. The Leopards extended their advantage early on in the fourth quarter, but Mooney rallied to trim the lead back down to four. Michael Pelini drilled a three-pointer to cut the Louisville lead to 57-53 with about 1:20 left to play

My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdThe Leopards answered back with a 6-0 run as the LHS defensive put the clamps down on three straight possessions. Chambers split a pair from the line and then made a layup via a long pass from Jones to put Louisville in front 60-53 with 41 seconds remaining. On their next trip down, Gronow hit a two and Chambers stole the ensuing inbound pass. 

From there the game turned into a free throw contest. The Leopards would bury 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to ice the game. They finished 18 of 22 (82%) from the charity line for the game. The Cardinals were even more efficient from the line making 14 of 16 (88%) shots from the stride.

Cardinal Mooney was led by Pelini who made a pair of three-pointers and scored 8 of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. Devon Jenkins also scored all of his 10 points in the second half and Thomas Fire ended the night with 9.

The Leopards are now 2-0 against the Cardinals all-time. Louisville defeated Mooney 75-58 last season. The victory also marked the 160th career win for Head Coach Tom Siegfried.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next challenge the Woodridge Bulldogs on Saturday, January 18 as part of the Spectrum Orthopedics Classic. Game time is set for 7:30 PM from North Canton Hoover High School.
