Leps Fall to Warriors on the Road at Home

West Branch 2, Louisville 1, 11 Innings

After countless runners were left on base, eleven innings, and nearly three and a half hours of baseball it was the home team West Branch Warriors that spoiled the Louisville Leopards chance to clinch the NBC outright on their own field.  Matt Unkefer hit a single to left field in the eleventh inning to drive in Jake Mull and give West Branch a 2-1 victory.

Louisville’s only run came in the top of the fourth inning when Jake Duvall singled to left field, stole second base, and then was driven in by Adam Nees.  The Leopards could not hold onto the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Warriors loaded the bases.  The game-tying run was walked in and the bitter cold contest refused to end as it delved into four extra frames.

Louisville and West Branch managed to leave a combined 23 runners on base, which included 12 for the Warriors and 11 for the Leopards.  Louisville also left a runner on third four times and left the bases loaded twice.

Duvall and Jeremy White led the Leps with three hits each.  Mike Kelly and Chad Neff both had doubles to give Louisville their only extra base-hits of the game.  On the mound, Kelly pitched seven innings giving up the lone tying run, striking out eight, and allowing only five hits.  Riley Groves relieved him, pitched 3.2 innings, and struck out five.

The Leopards can still win the NBC outright if Canton South can manage to beat Alliance in an NBC game.  The two teams met in a Sectional Final yesterday with South winning 10-2.

NEXT: The Leps will play Canton South in Canton on Thursday, May 19 at 5:00 PM.   The District Semifinals and Finals will both be held at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.  The Leopards split the season series with Canton South earlier this year, the Wildcats beat the Aviators 10-2 for to advance to play Louisville.
