Leopards Seniors Go Out On Top After Classic 11-10 Game
Louisville 11, Marlington 10, 10 Innings
After 354 pitches, 103 batters, and over 3 and half hours of baseball, Joey Duckworth delivered a bases loaded walk-off single in the 10th inning to lift Louisville past Marlington 11-10. With the victory, Louisville finishes the 2013 season even at 12-12 overall and 10-4 in the NBC.
Duckworth went 2-for-5 in the game and drove in 3 runs to lead the Leopards offense. Senior Kyle White also went 4-for-4 and scored 5 times for Louisville.
Louisville took a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Duckworth and Jordan Hughes each droves in runs, while Garrett Yoder provided a 2-run single to center. But the Leopards lead was quickly erased as the Dukes matched the total in the top of the second.
A pair of sacrifice flies by Senior Riley Groves and Hughes in the bottom half of the second put Louisville back up 6-4. But the Leps would surrender 5 runs to the Dukes in the top of the third to make the score 9-6 Marlington.
Slowly the Leopards would rally back. Duckworth provided an RBI single in the fourth inning to score White to cut the deficit to two. Then White would cause havoc on the base paths in the sixth to tally another run. White hit a one out single, advanced to second when Pavin Parks walked, stole third base, and then came home after the throw to third was overthrown. Marlington 9, Louisville 8, End of 6.
In the bottom of the seventh, Stephen Kerzan used a one out sacrifice bunt to bring home Joe Crank from third and knot the game up at 9-9. Kerzan had also helped keep the Leopards stay alive on the mound as he pitched 7 innings in relief, gave up just 1 run, and struck out 5.
The two squads traded runs in the eight inning as Louisville’s run came in the most dramatic of fashion. The Leopards loaded the bases with no outs, but two straight pop-outs kept their threat at bay. With 2 outs and an 0-2 pitch on the batter, the coaching staff called a play that worked to perfection. Parks, who was on second, went halfway to third and stopped. Noticing his sizable lead, the Marlington pitcher began walking towards him and a rundown ensued. White, who had been on third, immediately jetted home to score the game-tying run before Parks was tagged for the third out. 10-10.
After a scoreless ninth inning, Louisville got out of a 1st and 3rd jam in the top of the tenth. In the last of the tenth, Senior Jeremy McQuilkin laid down a perfect bunt single and advanced to second via an overthrow. The Dukes intentionally walked White and Parks sacrifice the runners over via a bunt. After Groves walked, Duckworth delivered a single to right field that barely got by the outstretched glove of the Marlington left fielder. McQuilkin was mobbed at the plate after scoring the winning run and the whole team celebrated. Duckworth’s single was eerily hit the same way and in the same location as his 12-11 walk-off single against Indian Valley a year ago.
With the victory, the Leopards finish alone in second in the NBC and continue their streak of 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record. Louisville and Marlington have split the season series the past five seasons now.
Leopard Nation would like to give a shout-out to our three Baseball Seniors Riley Groves, Jeremy McQuilkin, and Kyle White for all the dedication that has created amazing memories for the Louisville Baseball program.
