Louisville 13, Canfield 10

Connor Zwick found Andy Minster for a 25-yard Touchdown Pass with just 4:38 remaining to lift the Louisville Leopards past the visiting Canfield Cardinals 13-10 in the Opening Game of the 2013 season Friday.

Garrett Yoder jarred the ball loose and Bryce Mathie fell on it at the Cardinals 41 to setup what proved to be the game winning drive. After two plays that gained a yard, Zwick found Andy Minster just past the sticks for a 3rd-and-9 conversion. Two plays following that the two connected again to give the Leopards the lead.

Zwick finished 4 of 9 passing on the night with all 4 of his completions going to Andy Minster for 53 yards. Zwick also rushed the ball 21 times for 54 yards only to be outdone by runningback Walter Schrock who carried the ball 18 times for 69 yards.

Canfield’s next drive stalled when the Louisville Defensive Line spearheaded by Cory Neff penetrated and stopped the Cardinals for no gain on 4th-and-1. The Leopards took over on the Canfield 42 with 3:00 left.

After a three-and-out, the Cardinals got the ball back with 1:55 remaining on their own 22. Canfield drove 46 yards to the Louisville 32. However, a penalty pushed them back 5 yards and three straight incompletions forced them into a 4th-and-15 scenario. On the Cardinals final offensive play Dylan Kline rushed in to provide pressure on Quarterback Kimu Kim and Stephen Kerzan made the game-ending tackle on Aaron Jenkins 7 yards short of the first down line.

Canfield’s only touchdown came after a 9 play, 57 yard drive when Kim found Matt Milligan for an 11 yard strike with 3:24 remaining in the third quarter. Louisville would answer two drives later when Jordan Hughes connected on a 32 yard field goal with 7:12 to go. Hughes also made a 37 yard attempt to end the first quarter, while his opposition Bryan Kristan booted through a 20 yard field goal to end the first half.

Kristan’s kick capped the Cardinals longest drive of the night as they traveled 74 yards in 16 plays chewing up nearly eight minutes off the clock. The Cards converted a 3rd-and-14 and a 4th-and-7 to keep the drive alive.

Canfield out-gained Louisville 233-176 in yards from scrimmage, but their two giveaways proved to be the difference. Kim finished 14 of 25 passing for 156 yards and led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 37 yards. Jenkins was the Cardinals lead receiver making 6 catches for 89 yards.

The Leopards defense answered the call all night long. Yoder, who would later run back a punt 34 yards, sacked Kim to end the Cardinals first drive. After Zwick pinned Canfield on their own 1, AJ Minster intercepted a pass to give Louisville the ball on the Cardinals 34. Neff, along with Cole McElroy and Kline, took down Kim again to end another drive.

With the victory, the all-time series between Cardinals and Leopards is now dead even at 2-2 with the Leps winning the past two seasons. Louisville is now 58-30-2 all-time in opening games and this includes a 39-16 record in home openers.
