Lady Leopards Rewrite Record Book at Marlington, Finish 14-0

Louisville Lady Leopards Softball 14-0 NBC Champions

Louisville 20, Marlington 0, 5 Innings

The Louisville Lady Leopards Varsity Softball team rewrote the record books during their 20-0, 5 Inning victory at Marlington Tuesday. With the victory, Louisville becomes the first team in NBC history to go 14-0 in conference play three years in a row. The Lady Leopards are now 19-6 overall.

Louisville took a 10-0 lead at the end of the third inning last Thursday before the game was suspended due to the weather. The Lady Leopards matched that total Tuesday with 10 more runs in just two innings.

Louisville set a team record by cracking 5 home runs in the contest, all of which came on Tuesday. Kylie Zifer led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to right-center. It was her second blast of the season and the Lady Leopards’ team record-tying 25th of the year (they also had 25 in 2011).

Six batters later Annie Woolf crushed a three-run homer over the left field fence to set the new team Beatty's Sports Spring 2014 Baseball Shirt 1mark. Woolf would finish 3-for-5 for the game with 4 runs batted in. Emily Cantley followed with solo shot for her third home run of the season. It was also the third home run of the inning for Louisville, which was another team record.

The Lady Leopards continued their power fest in the fifth inning. Savannah Miner recorded her first varsity hit, which just happened to be a 3-run home run off the top of the left-center field fence. Miner became the 9th Louisville player to go yard this year.

Finally, Katie Cozy belted a solo shot that cleared the fence near the same spot where Miner hit her homer. This marks the first time in team history that the Lady Leopards have hit back-to-back homers twice in the same game. 4 of Cozy’s 6 home runs this season have come on the road.

With 29 home runs this year, Louisville is second all-time behind Medina Highland for team home runs in a single Division I season. The Hornets hit 31 home runs in 2013.

Louisville’s team leader in home runs, Grace Jackson, did not hit a homer during the contest. However, she did bat 3-for-4 with a double, 5 RBI’s, and 3 runs scored. Amy Hoover also scored 5 runs and Meghan Leasure crossed the plate 3 times as well.

In the circle, Morgan Harris pitched a complete game 1-hit shutout to improve her record to 8-3 on the season. Harris faced 15 batters and all 15 were retired consecutively. The Dukes only baserunner got aboard via a single in the first inning, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Harris struck out 4 batters over the final two innings to secure the shutout.

The 20-0 victory also ties Louisville’s largest margin of victory in NBC play. They also beat Minerva 25-5 on April 25, 1991 and downed the Lions 23-3 on May 2, 1992. The Lady Leopards have now won 52 consecutive NBC games and improve to 80-4 in conference play under Head Coach Chet Givens. Tuesday’s game was the most lob-sided shutout posted by Louisville since they defeated Canton Timken 29-0 on April 1, 1998.

With the victory, the Lady Leopards have now defeated the Lady Dukes 10 straight times. Marlington still narrowly leads the all-time series 27-26. However, Louisville has outscored them 81-0 over the last 6 meetings.

UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next travel to Massillon where they will take on the top-seeded North Canton Hoover Vikings in the DI District Semifinals.
