Hoover 5, Louisville 1

The #1 ranked North Canton Hoover Vikings downed the Louisville Lady Leopards 5-1 Wednesday in the DI District Championship game held at Massillon Washington High School. The Lady Leopards finished the season 23-5 and earned their first ever Division I District Runner-Up plaque.

Amy Hoover had 3 of the Lady Leopards 7 hits to lead the Louisville offense. The only Louisville run of the game came in the third inning when Chandler Rice’s 2-out infield hit allowed Brooke Cox to score from third. Cox also got aboard via an infield hit earlier in the inning and advanced to second on an overthrow. A bunt single by Hoover advanced Cox to third before she scored.

The Lady Leps would have other opportunities, but could not get the seven runners they left on base home. They left the bases loaded in the third inning and also failed to score in the fifth inning when the ducks were on the pond with nobody out. A wild 1-2-3 double play by the Vikings eliminated the largest Louisville threat of the evening.

For Hoover, Andi Farrah went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and 3 runs scored and  Kelly Dillow drove in 2 runs as well. Jenna Lilley also had an RBI double and Tara Thacker drove in a run, pitched a complete game, and struck out 12. The Vikings are now 30-0 and will look to defend their back-to-back DI State Championships in the Columbus Regional next week.

Hoover has now defeated Louisville three straight times and leads the all-time series 35-4. The Vikings now lead the all-time postseason series 5-0 as well.

The Lady Leopards played their hearts out and have nothing to be ashamed of in losing to a worthy opponent in North Canton. Going to a DI District Title game is a feat no previous Louisville Softball team has accomplished and while this loss may sadden Leopard Nation in the present, it plants a seed for the great future of Lady Leopards Softball that has yet to come.
