Lady Leopards Alone in First After Defeating Carrollton

Video Highlights

Louisville 65, Carrollton 54

Hollyann Mullett poured in 21 points to lead the host Louisville Lady Leopards past the previously NBC-unbeaten Carrollton Lady Leopards 65-54 Saturday afternoon.  Hannah Lemmon also scored 11 and Jordan Monnot added 10 to aid the Leps.  With the victory, Louisville is now 6-2, 5-0 and alone in first in the NBC.

Misfortunes turned into to blessings for the Leopards early on in the contest.  Emily Nees drew two quick fouls and Mackenzie Rankin Beatty's Winter Hoodiesreplaced her less than a minute into the contest.  Rankin made them pay by scoring on a fast break and drawing a foul.  She hit the extra free throw to make it 3-1 Lady Leps.  After buckets by Hannah Lemmon and Mullett, Rankin picked off a Warrior bounce pass and took it to the house.  However, her layup missed off the backboard which seemed to be another break for Carrollton.  However, Mullett rebounded the miss and put it back up and in while drawing a foul in the process.  The Lady Leps were defining the word “team” and had taken a 9-3 advantage.

The Warriors answered when Rachel Devine hit the first of her two three-pointers on the afternoon cutting the lead to 9-6.  But Hannah Lemmon matched it with a triple of her own to double the Warriors score at 12-6.  Still in the first quarter, the Warriors would use a 7-1 run aided by an Ali Poole three-ball to tie the game at 13-13.

But Louisville would answer back again in scoring five consecutive baskets.  Two came from Rachel Zeller, two from Mullett, and another from Hannah Lemmon to give the Lady Leps a double digit advantage early on in the second quarter.  The Warriors rallied to cut the deficit to 25-20, but Louisville scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 35-22 lead.  Monnot scored two of the field goals during the run to lead the Lady Leps.

In the second half, Louisville kept their foot on the gas.  Six different Lady Leopards scored in a third quarter that saw Louisville build an 18-point advantage.  Carrollton narrowed the gap to 53-39 before the quarter ended, but the damage had been done.  The Warriors tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but the Leopards defense held strong.  Back-to-back field goals by Mullett put her at 21 points on the evening and more importantly gave the Lady Leps their biggest advantage of the game at 63-43 with five minutes left in the contest.

Louisville began to pull the starters and Carrollton finished the game on an 11-2 run to finalize the score at 65-54.  Devine led the Warriors with 10 pointers, while Taylor Lowdermilk and Savana Lowery each added 9 for Carrollton.

The Leopards have now taken the last 19 meetings with the Warriors and are now 34-16 against them all-time.  The Lady Leopards go into the Christmas Break alone in first place, but with nine conference games remaining their journey for a third straight NBC title is far from complete.  Louisville will next challenge three non-conference foes before returning home to continue that mission in three straight conference games against Alliance, Canton South, and Minerva.
