Girls Soccer Suffers 1st Defeat, Hoover Rides Early Goal
North Canton Hoover 2, Louisville 1
The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Soccer team was doubled up by the visiting North Canton Hoover Vikings 2-1 Monday Night at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the loss, Louisville drops to 3-1 on the season.
The Leopards only goal came midway through the second half. Senior Midfielder Bri Horton fought hard to keep the ball in bounds and possession with the Leopards at midfield. On the other end of her pass was Freshman Forward Jenny Hamsher.
She dribbled out then back inward past two Vikings defenders before blasting a shot off the fingertips of the North Canton goalie. Fellow Freshman Forward Megan Hampe charged in after the ball that was loose in the center of the box. Hampe pushed it into the left side of the net to chop the Viking lead in half at 2-1 with 20:02 remaining in the contest. The goal was her second of the season.
Earlier, Hoover wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard Monday Night. Sophomore Forward Lesley Kiesling stormed through to intercept a Louisville pass in the backfield. She dribbled to the left side of the box and centered a pass to teammate Anna Kreinbrink. The Senior Forward flushed it home to give the Vikings the lead just 12 ticks into the game.
North Canton would double their lead at the 16:06 mark of the first half. Sophomore Midfielder Tess Cunningham got control of the ball at the top of the box and booted it into the top right corner of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of Hoover.
Stellar play by Leopards defenders Aubry Fankhauser, Kayla Gibson, Heather Guiley, and others helped keep the Vikings offense in check the rest of the way. Celia Keefe also had 10 saves in goal for Louisville.
North Canton outshot Louisville 13-5 for the game, but the Leopards held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Three offsides calls by Louisville also plagued the Leopards, with two of them coming late in the second half..
With the loss, Louisville has now dropped two straight against North Canton. The Leopards are now 2-8-1 against the Vikings all-time and have still never beaten them at home (0-3-1).
